What amps or effects or guitar types do I need to get that heavy Old Metallica sound like master of puppets or those other old songs?

-I want to get that Boss MT-2 Metal Zone 2, I heard that it was really good.

HAVE YOU DONE A SEARCH?

on the net, for past articles with Mettalica?

my guess is, you'd have to read up on the studio techniques that were used, buy exactly the same equipment, play at the same volume, and play at least as well as Mettalica.........
and that's just for starters.

i doubt any one pedal would do the job.

Half of that sound (guitar wise) is in the muting technique.

Just find an old JCM 800 amp and an ESP guitar. There was probably some line boosters somewhere in the signal but thats just nonsense. A Mesa would probably do the trick to a T.

Randal might be a cheap alternative for hyperdrive.

Oh ya, and you might wanna check out a noise suppressor while you are at it.

BASS somewhere between 6 - 10
MIDS at zero
HIGHS somewhere around 6 - 10 also.

Standard Metal EQ

They used the ADA MP-1 guitar preamp. Most of their tone came from the MP-1.

(A little spam while I'm at it) I'm selling my MP-1, just got a new computer & I need to pay it off. $90. ;)

Drink a whole lot of booze, sue your fans for downloading your mp3s, and talk out of your ass a lot. That ought to just about do it.

For Kirk Hammett tone try this;

Guitar with humbucker.

Chorus (Level about 50%, Speed about 20% Depth about 75%)

Distortion (Level about 50%, lows about 50%, mids about 15% and Highs about 50%)

That set up should get you close to the tone he used for the song "One."

For Hammett, Just solo in the wrong key, and spend your spare time convincing everyone it's the right key because of some bizarre mathematical equation.

For Hetfield, just use 20 guitar tracks and about 15 amps and cabs. Oh, a killer producer and 4 years to make your album doesn't hurt either.

turn up the Low and High ends, none at all on the Mids, if you are a poor white guy like me, Death Metal pedal sounds decent, and found using that and a Chorus gives a low chug chug sound I think you are looking for, tons of feedback though so don't roll up the volume on the guitar all the way. Also to get a deeper cleaner sound, run all of the pedals through a bass amp, also with the Low and High ends ripped and the Mid down. You will never get the full tone of Metallica or Mesa Boogie though without getting one of those amps yourself, I played on one for a while, was not too satisfied, found an Line-6 amp with presets of mesa boogie along with tons of other setups that sounded just like the real amps. Also the POD can achieve the sound you are looking for.

good luck, and oh yeah, most definitely need to be drunk.

Are you reffering the the solos on "AJFA"? I love those weird dissonant sounds he gets. They rock but they are exotic. Yoiu should open your mind.

As far as Hetfield - he reproduces that massive sound live, so that fucks that theory.

How can I get the "New" metallica sound. There are some pesky cats I want to get rid of.

In the early days they used the Mesa Studio Preamp. THEY NEVER, NEVER, NEVER USED A ADA MP1....AND NEITHER SHOULD ANYONE ELSE!

P.S. It's been about 12 years since they put out a good album....
....newest one has some great sounds....but just plain sucks!

It also helps to sound like them if you run around having your fans thrown in jail and yelling "we don't want you for fans if you are to cheap to pay $16 for our cd!" And then forget that bootleging is exactly what they use to tell their fans to do when they said "it's not about money...it's about the music!" Then you can blame poor album sales on your fans stealing instead of crappy material!

As long as a concert ticket cost $125, then...long live Napster!

everything after "garage days..." kind of sucked.

I have heard them live more than once - their studio sound is way heavier to my ears. I remember reading that they layerd as many as nine unison parts on master of puppets (my fav album of theirs).

Definitely boogie mark series or rectifier.

metal zone sounds good by itself, wont hold up in a live mix.

which garage days? i believe there have been 3 officially released.

the signature metallica guitar tone (which i think really hit its peak in the MOP/justice era)is easily done with a very powerful amp, gain rather cranked, and the mids scooped, at least in general. there's a little more to it, but those're the basics for certain.

the first after cliff died.

I really trieed to like "and justice..." but the most of the lyrics seemd so corny and lame... just my opinion of course.

after black album and sandman i tuned out.

but, like any artist who braves the criticism and does their shit, they deserve respect.

What's exotic about a pentatonic scale in the wrong key? Nothing. Any guitar player with a year of experience can play a pentatonic scale, and any guitarist who's tone deaf can do it in the wrong key.

As a collective whole, ...And Justice for All is a masterpiece. But all the guitar solos not played by Hetfield are horrible (except for that intro solo in "One," but that's Kirk's one variation from the theme).

pentatonic scales exist in every mode except locrian. so - six modes, six pentatonics. ionian and aeolian are relative maj/min as are dorian/lydian and phrygian/mixolydian, so actually just three, but they are all derived from the diatonic scale.
So for instance, in a minor, an e minor or d minor pentatonic is still in the right key, just emphasizing a different mode. So it's not in the wrong key, it's just phrased around a different tonal center. Lots of players do this.

KH is not my fav guitarist by a longshot, but calling him tone deaf is a bit narrow...

anything unfamiliar will sound "wrong" at first. it takes time for the ear to develop a taste for it.
