How Do You Get Full, Boomy Sub Without Overloading It?

I'm working on a track that I want to have a really big, full bass bit, with both a sub and a synth bass, but I can't seem to find the sweet spot, either it's too quiet and underwhelming, or too loud and starting to distort. I'm fairly new to this whole thing, so any tips would be appreciated!
 
The question should really be what it sounds like to people with different systems. No point it sounding great on your system and terrible on others?
 
This is about finding the correct frequencies to reduce and those to emphasize as well as masking issues if you are using two low frequency elements at the same time. An audio file would help answers.
