How do you finger this chord?

"Very carefully" is not the answer I'm looking for... :D

Am
-5--
-5--
-5--
-5--
-x--
-5--

Technically, that's an Am7.

I would finger it with 2 on the low E string and 3 barring the other four notes.

I would use my thumb to fret the A on the low E string and my index finger to bar the rest.

Damn I'm retarded. I don't know why I didn't think of that.

How about................."With great difficulty"

Hook the thumb around the neck onto the bottom E string (A note), that leaves you one finger for each string! :D  Barre with the index! Don't forget to mute the "D" note! :D

The only criticism I have regarding the thumb on the bottom note is that it's (to me) a little more cumbersome if you're going to be doing any sliding around, as with a funk part, say.

To clarify: I'm not one of those "no thumb" Nazis. I use my thumb all the time ... just not on this chord.

Index finger 1st fret B string pinky finger 5th fret E string and play the other strings open.

I would barre the 5th fret with my first finger, and mute the fifth string with my ring finger. Or even fret it, it's in the chord.

Guess I am a thumb nazi since mine seems too damned small, but I am with Mr. Beagle on this one. The second finger naturally mutes the 5th string. It's a beautiful thing and I am soo glad I got to share it with you.

Martha :)

John Frusciante regularly uses this fingering to play funk with out any noticeable problems.

I play primarily funk myself & use my thumb - its a lot easier...even while sliding.

The -x-- is really just the E string duplicated - isn't going to gain you much anyway, and will just get in the way while moving around. It is essentially a "non-portable" chord.

The following will give you the same thing, it's legit, can be grabbed in a single barre, and is portable:

Am
-5--
-5--
-5--
-5--
-7--
-5--

i.e. you just barre across the 5th fret, and clamp down the A string on the 7th fret with any convenient finger.

That's definitely a valid approach. But I could also argue that if you want the sound of that low E string in the chord, then you should finger it. Even though you are playing the same notes, the flavor will be slightly different.

If you play the same notes on a guitar in standard tuning versus a guitar that's tuned down 2 steps, the nuances will be different-- even though they are the same notes. If you are going for the detuned guitar sound, fretting the same chord on a standard tuned guitar is not going to cut it.

Anyway, just trying to stir up some shit. Hopefully by the end of this thread we will all be slinging insults and comparing each other to Hitler. :D

Cheers!

SCREW YOU NAZI-MAN!!!!!!

:D I actually agree with you, though.

You're trying to say that tone matters? Now I've heard everything....

Anyway, valid point, Hitler.

Thanks you miserable Nazis!

I'm glad you could take a break from operating your gas chambers to discuss these issues!!

Sincerely,
The Tone Nazi

:D

Or one could take the Keith Richards approach and just remove the 5th string...
