Robert,

I've been liking your tunes since the first time I heard them on this website. I even played some for my officemate and he was digging it.

If you're the lead man, don't be afraid to keep it clean with "The Robert Tait Band".

Like Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews, etc...they don't need a fancy name. The music speaks for itself.

I don't think Beer Garden does you any justice, IMHO. Sounds like a band that will be limited to college venues.

Either keep branstorming, or just use your name bro.

Hey thanks! Yeah, I actually considered just leaving it Robert Tait or whatever, but for one, I'm not egotistical enough, and 2, the other guys weren't too keen on it...not cuz it was my name, but because they didn't want to get lost in a sea of performers that mearly name themselves after their own name.

I do agree, that that would probably be the best route, but for now I don't think it'll work.

I think the name Beer Garden can be limiting, but only if you let it. I mean, look at Pearl Jam...how stupid does that sound? They all sound pretty stupid the first time you hear them...Smashing Pumpkins...I mean WTF?!

Unfortunately, it's really only name we ALL liked. I appretiate the help! and by all means...if you think of anything, we're not married to Beer Garden.

I'd probably try TAIT, but strangely enough, that's taken as well.

Thanks man!
Tait

I see what you're saying.

I've got one:

SEX WAX

just wander around a good cd store & you'll be inspired by the bazillions of band names there...

I gotta tell you though..."Beer Garden" sounds like the local polka band playing at the bierfest.

I played in a band that wanted an "off the wall" name, we went for Mural, if you want an "off the beach" name try Hurricane Warning. OK I admitt it, I'm warped.

I thought "Tate" was taken, but maybe I'm wrong. I forget how he spells his name. I knew some guys in that band.

Anyway, I'm with the others; I think beer garden is an awful name, no offense. Sure you can go with the excuse that there are successful bands with dumb names out there, but that's no reason not to try to come up with a good name now. What others were considered? Why didn't anyone like them?

Of course, it's your band, so do what you like.

yeah, Tait is taken. I believe they are some kind of Christian music...Tate may or not be taken, but it's not my name, so i really wouldn't take that.

your not making this any easier...as i said, we've literally been through around 100 available names, and this is the only one that we all agreed didn't totally suck. apparently not everyone here agrees. Like I said, we're open for suggestions, but i think you'd be suprised how many names ARE taken. for example...check out UBL.com. Just about anything you can think of is taken. We were looking at Idiot Proof, until we saw it was taken...by two bands no less. Coming up with a name is harder than it looks.

Yeah, those are the guys I know; not all of them, just one or two. My old band mate was close with the singer for a while, and we hired one of their guitar players for a gig once. Back in the day...

Sorry; I know it's tough. You're gonna get criticism no matter what name you pick. Just give it some time, mull it over, run it by people you know who are into what you do. If you still think it's a good name after time and criticism, go with it.

Well, I think we're going to can the "Beer Garden" name and go with "Three Song Set". It was a joke when my guitarist and I first started playing. We only had like 3 songs, so when we'd play open mic we'd tell them our name was 3 song set. Then we kind of joked, as we added more songs that..."Hey were Five Song Set now!" Just stupid stuff, but I think we might go with it. Thanks guys!

I sympathise. Getting a name everyone agrees on, assuming you run your band on democratic lines, is very difficult. That's why it's best to start with a name first, then form the band, if they join the name's already in place!

Seriously though, what's in a name?
Assuming 'Depeche Mode' were not a famous band, would that be a good name to choose? But because everyone's heard of it now we accept it! How about 'Deep Purple', if you think about it too much that name is crap, imagine someone suggesting calling your band 'Light Orange', you'd laugh right?

As long as the name is not too silly or goofy sounding then people will listen and decide, not on the basis of the name, but the music played. hasving said that some names do seem to suit genres of music, for example 'The Dallas Boys' suggests a country band, whereas 'fRANKESNTEINS cURSE' suggests a goth/metal band, and so on...

'Three Song Set' sounds 'mild' to me, innofensive, like a house band or covers band name? The if you spelt it differently you could change that perception, eg '3SongSET', 'Threes Ongset', I actualy preferred Beer Garden myself but with a change to 'Bear Garden' !!

Ask a 100 people you'll get a hundred names!

Reminds me of our discussions on a name for my covers band 4 years ago. I wanted a name with 'Roxy' in it, my mate wanted a name with 'Doctor' in, so we ended up after various permutations with 'Dr.Rox' and the rest is history.
Good job we didn't have the bass player and guitarist in at the time!
LOL.

GLYNB: I think that's the best damn summary i've ever heard to finding the right band name. :D I'm forwarding it off to my band members. Thanks!

Tait

Ha!
Glad it amused you Robert.

(Having looked at the pictire of the surfer on your site maybe it should be '3ThongSet' ?)

Good luck, whatever you decide to call yoursleves!

Hey Robertt8,

I like the Three Song Set suggestion. It means something to you guys, it's catchy and succinct - unless you're required to say it ten times fast I would say it's a marketing coup. :)

Oh, and I loved the songs. Very summer, and totally toes-in-the-water mellow.

AG :)

hey thanks aussigirl! the more we think about it, we're worried that we're going to get lumped in with all the other "3" bands like 3rd door down, or 3rd eye blind, 311...there's a bunch of em' maybe too many. But then again, we're gonna find problems with just about any name if we look hard enough.

thanks for the comments on our tunes!

Over and out!
Tait

Well how about changing the first word to something that sounds the same, but means something different 'FREE SONG SET'.

Finding a band name is the hardest part of being in a band. The rest of the stuff, like the writting, the performing and stuff is the easy part!! ha. only kidding.
There are alot of bands coming out with poor poor names at the moment. like dash board confessional, in car stereo, boy sets fire, jet plane landing, matchbox 70s b line disaster. I mean the bands might be pretty good, but the names suck. seems like a kinda trend for band names to me. I aint saying our band name is any good as there are about 100 other bands with the same name!
