How Do You Find a Good Band Name?!?!

How the hell do you find a decent band name?! Everything we come up with seems to really suck. They're usually smart ass names that have nothing to do with our music (we're kind of mellowish acoustic guitar...jack johnsonish stuff) and we come up with stupid names we'd never really use like Satan's Vagina or something stupid like that. No mater how many we come up with, we're no closer to our goal.

I wanted something that's kind of beachy, maybe imply mellow tunes...i don't know...crap...

Any good ideas or help??? Cuz we REALLY suck at it.

Best thing to do is get the band together, give everyone a pen and paper, then just start brainstorming. If it starts going off on a joking tangent (and naming a band always does), bring it back to serious and start over. Once you've got 4 or 5 names that are halfway decent, get on the internet and find out if any of them are taken. If you still have a couple, vote on them.

And good luck; band names are a diminishing resource.

Look at the names of race horses and brainstorm from there.
 
How about "Hardtack and the Salted Pork"?

Start off with picking the style of name.

First large category, group names. These are names that can often be attributed to each member of the group, as in "Hey, aren't you a Temptation?":

You've got plural nouns with definitive articles:

The Ramones

and singular:

The Knack

The plural group name is an older style, which implies a classic style of music.

OK, now without the article:

Butthole Surfers

and singular:

Garbage

and of course singer with group:

plural:

? and the Mysterians

singular:

Scandal featuring Patti Smyth

a rare subtype, using the indefinite article:

A Flock of Seagulls


OK, now on to a more abstract style, single word names. You've got:

Anthrax

Nirvana

with adjectives:

Blue Cheer

sentence fragments:

Smashing Pumpkins

and even entire phrases:

It's a Beautiful Day

But just because your group is a noun doesn't mean your name has to be, even though it effectively is:

The The

and of course names with numbers (be careful here, these can run together in the mind of listeners):

U2

Seven Mary Three

Matchbox 20

Blink 182

I wanted to use the word Hokum but the band chose something else.

It means to present something in a sincere manner but in all truth being insincere. Kind of like when you show up to do a gig and just before you go on you say something like- "God I am tired of this shit" and then you take the stage and tell them how happy you are to be there.

My old band used the rare verb band name ("spinaround"). Not too many band names are just straight up verbs.
 
Hey thanks everyone! I think we've finally found a name that we don't all hate. I think we're going with Beer Garden as a name...we all like drinking, and there's few places better to drink in than a beer garden. Anyhoo...thanks!

Let me get this straight...your band name is Serpent's Nectar and you play hip hop?! that name sounds right out of the genre of Slayer or Iron Maden...interesting take on it though :D ...unless I just completely missread your post :rolleyes: ...which is quite possible.

Well it sounds like you need to do a little musician shopping, and you'll be in business!

I've been liking your tunes since the first time I heard them on this website. I even played some for my officemate and he was digging it.

If you're the lead man, don't be afraid to keep it clean with "The Robert Tait Band".

Like Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews, etc...they don't need a fancy name. The music speaks for itself.

I don't think Beer Garden does you any justice, IMHO. Sounds like a band that will be limited to college venues.

Either keep branstorming, or just use your name bro.
