hey all,
I'm just wondering what people think about distributing their music. For me, id rather be famous than rich. I think if you are a good musician the money will come later. people will pay to see shows and buy merchandise.

All I want is for my music to be listened to.
I wouldn't be in the music business for the money, it's what I love to do, and I just want my message/music to be heard by as many people as possible. If that means giving access to free mp3 downloads, so be it.

I post up the raw tracks in mono format for anybody that wants to hear the song. If you want to hear it mixed and mastered, buy the CD.-Richie

I don't have any problems with people downloading my MP3s. I plan on putting the songs on a CD eventually anyway so I'm just giving them an idea of what my music sounds like. Of course I'll only put about two or three songs from each project on the site I use. No sense in letting them all go for free, eh!

Woah......sort of mercenary aint' cha?....
How much profit have you made Richie?

The way I look at it is that if you want to be noticed...you need to play out live....it is also a good way to sell CDs....it's the only way...

You will most likely never be successful unless you play out live.
The only exception I can think of is Steely Dan.....but, they are legends...ya know?

anyone is welcome to listen to my tunes though.....is only music...

i feel the same way except that i do hip hop and a lot of people will take your isht and chop it up, you know sample it and use part of it. but anyway we do what we can to distort it

Since I play for fun and to unwind and relax, anyone who listen to my tunes and likes them is a big enough thrill for me.
If I WAS that good, I would be making music for a living, rather than my favorite hobby...well, more than a hobby, but certainly something I cannot devote enough time to really put out something exceptional.
Now, the thought of my music actually bringing in money for me? That would be cool, but not really realistic at this time.
So download away!

Sharing my music doesn't bother me. Very few people even really download it; it's not worth the trouble for most of us to even offer it for sale. Hopefully that will change someday. :)

i think

i agree with the 1st person that replied here id rather be famous than rich i just want my music to be heard

A very Good Topic

It's funny because i was thinking about this the other day. I still have songs on my pages but I do not post anymore. The reason i stopped is because alot of people make it a habit to get into a pissing contest over a beat a rap or whatever. Now I still will let my friends hear my tracks through AIM or whatever but as far us uploading I think i'm pretty much done with that faze.
When members of HR get together an do like a collab (which we are right now) I will post that an see what people think of it.

Peace,

Kevlar

Id rather be rich than famous....i could live without cameras all in my face and people all in my business....just give me the check for my work and im good....i been in the hood all my life and i dont want to die that way.

I've uploaded all my song onto my site, and i've actually sold about 10 CDs that way. Yes, people could download it, but some folks want a nicely jacketted CD, etc. Plus I sign it...lol....for whatever it's worth...lol.

The goal is to have people listen to the music and get feedback. I have a perfectly great day job so the music, i'd do it anyway even if no one listens to it. Of course, it's an honor when someone listens, and ends up buying it. Oh....i also make it easy for someone to buy...just use paypal...:-)

Sold at $15 US a CD!

It's all fun and good!

i think if you didn't offer it for free downl;oad, people would get it anyway - kazaa, etc, so you may as well be a good sport and share. having said that, I think there is room for offering a couple of songs free as a preview and then selling CDs or a download of the album. It's always gonna be cheaper than what you pay in record stores - I've almost quit record shopping which sucks, but at least I can buy food now. . .

Y'know it's a really tough question.

In principal I think 'Yeah, make it free and get it out to as many people as possible. You should be grateful people are taking the time to listen.' But on the other hand I find myself think 'God... all this equipment I use to make my music is really expensive, I wish this music thing would pay for itself a little. Also, think of the amount of time it takes to write, record, mix and master a track to a standard I feel happy with...'

Now that I have broadband I really like streaming the music - people get to hear it in good quality but not download and distribute it willy nilly. To be honest it's something I still find myself at loggerheads with myself on...

I can't get a gig to save my life but people from all over the world (Netherlands, India, China, Norway, Sweeden, Austria, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Canada, England, Italy.....) are downloading my tunes. FREE works just fine for me for now.
