the name of the topic says it all. i have a bunch of them on my computer but i havent been able to figure out how to write songs using them and/or how to save them in the song. im using nuendo to do my recordings

VST can be virtual instruments generally triggered via midi data from a keyboard or controller. A collection of audio samples with velocity & pitch control to resemble a real instrument.
There are also VST plug-ins compatible with most recording software.

maybe im just not getting it. does that mean that if you have a keyboard with a midi in and out, you can connect a cable from your computers output into the input of the keyboard and then when you play notes on your keyboard they will emulate the sounds on the vst? then by using a cable from your output on your keyboard to the input on your soundcard it will record it?

it sounds confusing but hopefully you'll understand what im trying to say

Simply record a midi track via your keyboard using any instrument then load the VST as an audio instrument and it will respond to the midi track by playing the track with the loaded VST instrument.

do you need to put the vst instrument on while you are recording real time or do you just place it over the existing file and it replaces the orriginal instrument with the VST

You can do it either way. I usually use real time to get the right effect Im looking for. Some instruments have a certain feel to them and need to be used live.
