How do the drums sound on this?

Drums sound a little focused to me. Not enough of a stereo field. Maybe pan the overheads some more if there are any.

I like the toms, kick is ok but has a weird 'click' on it, snare sounds a bit overcompressed.

Bass sound is rocking! Drum playing is great to. Song is kinda repetitive :)

The drums sound way to center and compressed. The levels don't seem to get out intop space very well. This kinda goes for the whole recording.

Cool bass sound but this is way too pasted feeling without lyrics.

I even heard a splice glitch or two...

Needs a change or build.

Thanks guys.

The drums and bass are pretty much straight up the middle. (but the overheads are panned.)

For that Bass sound, we used a Fender Jazz into an Alembic Tube pre-amp, with a Carvin "DCM 1500" power Amp powering a Carvin 2x10" cabinet, and mic'ed it with a D112 about 12" away from the box. My brother just seems to get an awesome "growl" out of that setup. He just bought a little SWR Amp (I think it's called "the working man" or somethingh like that, and it rocks! I can't wait to see what kind of bass sound we get out of that thing!

I don't know where the hell that glitch sound is coming from, because I didn't splice it...I probably had something happening when I ran the tracks into N-Track....I really need to buy a REAL soundcard (I'm just running into an old Soundblaster 128).

I'm thinking I must have had my gains to high and had a peak or two (I'm recording in digital on DA-38's.)

Over top of the Bass and Drums, there's a ton of horns as well as an Acoustic bass.

I'm trying to rethink my strategy, because my drumsound is just...it's "lifeless" to me, for lack of a better term....it's like it's really one dimensional, and the stereo pair of mic's are panned hard left and right...so I think I'm having some phasing problems going on.

Thanks again,

Tim

How much compressio are you using on the drum channels? The drums need a bit of air around them.

It would be a good idea to re-think your drum recording techniques.

to me you got some technique reminiscent of B.Cobham, If you could get a copy of a tune from his Spectrum album (its old) and listen to the panning on his drums it might help you get situated a little better, or listen to just the panning setup on some of Neal Pert`s stuff.. The bass tone is pretty good, the jazz is a workhorse. A light touch eq bloom on the low end would give it a little more meat. :) Kinda funny that my brother is a drummer/percussionist and I`m a bassist. We used to drill each other with rudamentals.

Yeah... the compression, the panning, the clicky bass are all there. But the thing that stands out the most to me is the snare "phazes out" when he does a roll on it. The playing is tight though. Bass is badass tone!

Good

Nice playing first. I think that your drums sound good, and focused but there needs to be more of a live feel...i guess i have the same problems. Depending on the room you are recording them in you may be able to breathe some life into those drums with some room mics. That is what i plan on doing to attempt to get a little life outta mine. bass sound is cool, but could be a bit bigger...and bassier. Sounds good
