How do I start my own record label?

first off, you need a good lawyer, a good studio, and a good $15,000 (not including the studio). then a lot of paperwork.

People who start businesses are people who have experience in a business and know enough about it to get it going. You clearly know nothing, therefore stand no chance of starting one at this point.

Go get a job AT a record label, and after you know how the place runs like the back of your hand, then you MIGHT be able to pull it off, assuming you have the funding, the contacts, the right people, etc..

What are you trying to accomplish?

If you want to impress girls by saying, "I own a record label," then peel one off an old LP and stick it in your billfold. Then you can say, "I own a record label; wanna see it?"

Your train of thought probably had a couple of goals in mind, and then you thought the label thing would be the vehicle.

There may be easier ways to accomplish your ideas.

So watcha wantin' to see happen?

Selling your own CDs isn't hard. You can get them printed with cover art pretty cheap anymore, then sell them locally in the places people know your band. You can also set up an account at soundclick.com which will expose you to more of an audience, and that might connect you to more customers. After you sell a bunch, you might be able to get some radio stations in your area to start playing it, and that might lead to more sales.

Starting a label is simple. Take me, for example. One day I simply decided that I was the exective producer for a record label called Orange Industry Recordings. Now, if I only had a recording studio...

That's got to be how a lot of indie labels get started, though. One day you just decide that you are a label; that's the first step(of many)

After you sell a bunch, you might be able to get some radio stations in your area to start playing it, and that might lead to more sales.

You really don't need to sell a bunch, actually. Ever heard of college radio, weatherman? My local college station(KFSR 90.7 FM Fresno, CA) plays music by bands that have produced barely enough CDs to give to their friends and the DJ down at the station.

Read it... I quoted with small editing here and there... I always believe start a thing with 3 S:

- Start from yourself!!!
- Start from the smallest thing you can do!!!
- Start from NOW!!!

You'll be there in time. For example, you can go visit record label around your town, or start from local CD store and ask them nicely how those CDs could get there... Develop!!!

Just go through Orchard if you're just doing it for yourself.

Hell, there's a bunch of indie labels with several dozen releases that just go through Orchard. In the grand scheme, it's a bargain.
