I want to play my MIDI keyboard in FL Studio. So far, I've got the controller triggering the VSTs. How do I record what I play, into the song? The keyboard is not a synth, it's just a controller.

I don't about FL.

The usual way of recording your midi is to set up a track for midi input, arm it for recording, and hit record. You need to have FL set up to play something from the midi, which means either having a VSTi on the rack, or a sample soundback, or a midi sound library.

I've tried 'record arming' a track. Nothing is recorded. When I look in the folder, no file exists. In any case, that's not what I want - that's for making a .wav recording (apparently - except it doesn't work!) and a .wav is no good to me anyway. I want to be able to edit and transpose the notes afterwards and I cannot do that with a .wav file.

If I do it in pattern mode, with step sequencing on, the notes are inputted but without the gaps. The notes appear directly next to each other and any sense of rythym is lost.

I just don't understand this at all.

It says you can enter notes and then hit the * key to move the pointer to each section of the song, where you want another note to appear but in that case, what is the point of having a keyboard controller to do that? I might as well have used the mouse.

Just making sure: after 'record arming' the midi-track you hit 'record' before starting to play?

I also havent used fl studio but i assume they are all quite same like.

Yes, I was hitting record arm and then play, like you should.

Sorry for crying wolf (again). I sat here and fiddled about until I worked it out (with a little help from YouTube).

You have to set the MIDI settings; uncheck the 'Into Step Sequencer' option or it won't make it into the pattern.

Then the record arm button has right-click options, too. You get a choice of 'Automation' 'Score' & 'Audio'. Guess which one I picked... :) They call it a 'record filter'. 'Spose they want to minimize on buttons. I dunno...

(Just in case anyone needs to know!)

Cheers
