How do I Keep My Hard Drive From Looking in the Mirror?

Hey Guys,
Is it a huge problem when the hard drive re-calibrates itself every 10 or so minutes? I mean, if I am recording and this happens, is that take just ruined? If I am mixing down then is it ruined again? And when I am burning to CD if it does it is that ruined too? What I mean is, is this a SERIOUS problem or only a minor annoyance that "can happen from time to time"? Is there a way areound this problem? Cas computer be set to not re-calibrate itself every 10 or so minutes? Do I have to buy a special hard drive for this? Is the Maxtor 7200 RPM hard drive a good hard drive to buy for this problem?

Hmmmm... I consider myself reasonably well versed on PCs and OSs, but I have no idea what you mean about a drive "re-calibrating itself every 10 minutes". Are you saying that the drive just starts up every few minutes? If so this could indicate insufficent RAM - the PC is hitting the swap file constantly. If you have less than 128 megs RAM, buy more - it's cheap and your system will run much better.
 
Here is a thought

If you are using windows 95, there is a program called findfast. I never could figure out the purpose for this program, but if you go into control panal and click on the findfast program, you can change the paremeters to have a longer time. I used to set mine to 8 hours.

If you don't have win 95, I don't know what the problem is.

Again a second drive will definitely help.
 
Older hard drives do recalibrate themselves. In fact for a while there they were selling "audio-video" drives that would not hiccup. Today as far as I know most 7200RPM hard drives do not suffer from any serious recalibration issues.

What kind of drive do you have...and are you sure it's recalibrating...or is something else going on?

And here I thought from the title that someone was asking a question about disk mirroring... I was getting excited there for a minute. Sad, I know. :D.
