i'm trying to figure out how to get a sound that may last 4sec. to begin at a low volume and when it reaches the end be at a peak volume. thanks in advance.

are you recording the synth through midi, perfecting it, and then recording the midi to audio?
if so, then you can use the attack midi controller number [73] or you can adjust the expression midi controller number [11] while the note(s) are playing in your favorite sequencer.

i'm not midi literate at the moment i have a midi keyboard and midi software but for the moment i run my sounds through the headphones jack out of the keyboard into the analog input adapter on the sound card. if the note is already recorded, how do i go about doing this. btw, i peeped out a few of your posts, and from the looks of the instruments you were referring too i put two and two together with your a.o. and that back yard flavor came to mind. holla back

trying out the advice
instead of using a sample that i already have i'm going to try and record it in real time following the advice that everyone has given me, but i would still like to know how to accomplish that effect on a prerecorded sound. thanx everyone.

maan, that is funny. i was just using the fade-in that's inside of soundforge to edit a wave. and it never came to mind during the beat to use it on this other sound. i guess when you try and think to deep into things you tend to miss the whole picture. the funny thing is, is that almost everyone was trying to tell me just that, but i thought they were referring to the hardware mixer. thanx everyone.
