I am looking for a thread that states how to find out the date of Manufacture on Quantegy 456 tape. I know you look at the white label on the box. I just dont know how to read it. Also is 1/2" Quantegy 456 tape made in 2007 bad???

The first four digits of the serial should be the year, the last three are the day of the year I think. I have one labelled "2006208". As for the quality relative to earlier batches, I can't really say. It won't have sticky-shed, though.

Well I have just received some that says 2007145. Is that possible? That means it was made on the 25th of may about 2 weeks ago...WTF??? I thought that they were Kaput???

Yup, that seems about right. The tape was made on the 145th day of 2007. [Or at least it says so on the box]. Yeah, WTF indeed!

Can you take a picture of that and post it here?

Cheers! :)

Well, first off, when did you buy this tape? I assume it's with-in the last day or two?

And yes, the last 3 digits refer to the day of the year so it seems really odd that a date code could be printed out for a period of time after the production had stopped for 456.

The picture would basically show if you are reading the numbers correctly. :)

Cheers! :)

I bought the tape I think it was just last Tuesday June 5th. I just got it yesterday Friday the 9th...
I will take some pics tomorrow morning but it does say 2007145. So yeah Im confused. Thats why I brought it up. And it does appear to be an authentic label...Oh well we'll see tomorrow..

Here are some pics...

Wow!

Perhaps Quantegy was lying all along when they said they were discontinuing production on these tapes?

Truth is stranger then fiction indeed!

Cheers! :)

Yeah,
I dont know what this exactly means. I guess I like having tape that is soo new. But the thing is I cant test it yet. Why? cause I dont have a machine to play it with. Why Not? Cause I figured Id grab some of this tape before i got a machine... Once I get a few more rolls I will then be turning my attention towards getting a 38-8. I should get a few reputation points for those pics huh???

Ya know if it ends up that Quantegy is still in business and made up this whole "Were in big trouble" story just to drive up prices I think I'd be a little pissed. Or yeah we were bankrupt but we magically are back...That'd be derty...

Well, they did do it once, and it worked. Never trust a corporation...

When Quantegy made the “closure announcement” they gave a certain date that orders would have to be in (Feb 28) and claimed they would be producing tape into April to fill the orders. Perhaps they’re just a bit behind on filling the orders. They may have underestimated time, but still must fill the orders they are committed to.

Judging from the lack of play-by-play news as we had in the shutdown of ’05 apparently Quantegy CEO, Frank Foster plays golf with the editor of Opelika-Auburn News, or something. We may never know when the production machines stop for the last time, or what happens to them or the formulations, which could conceivably be passed along to someone else. In ’05 Opelika-Auburn were all over the tape story with regular updates. This time the paper’s silence gives them co-conspirator status with Quantegy.

So much for or free press… well I guess they are free not to focus on something to help cover a friend’s ass.

As to the question of whether Quantegy tape made in 2007 is any good... at this point I consider anything after mid 2005 to be questionable. The people that buy it will ultimately have to tell us how their particular batch is working out, but at this time I'm avoiding it because it’s too hit-or-miss.

Many things happened in secret after the reorganization, including a sudden decline in tape quality compared to the pre-1995 Quantegy. This along with poor management decisions lead to the end of Quantegy as a tape company.

And by the way... about the tape date :D https://homerecording.com/bbs/showpost.php?p=2607793&postcount=5

And next time I'll post the link to this post instead... see how many times one will eventually have to click to get the answer. ;) Oh well, I guess that's why we call this The Web.

Quantagy is finishing long-term orders that were placed earlier (large quantities). Quantagy will not accept any new orders.

Well i didnt order the tape from Quantegy. I ordered it from an online tape store. They told me that they have quite a bit left. I just dont understand how I can order tape in June and have them send me tape from 2 weeks prior? Its not like I made the order months ago. Unless the place I ordered it from said well if you guys are going out of Bussiness we need 50,000 more reels of 1/2 inch. Thats the only way i can see this working...

...and the mystery continues....

There could be a secret production facility that’s going to remain open. My guess is it’s either very near the spot where Eva Braun used to sneak upstairs into the open to have a cigarette between bombing raids, looking out over the garden towards Brandenburg Gate... or they’ve hidden the "Works of Magnetic Description" (WMDs) somewhere in the colored region in the map below. These people are really, really good at hiding things.

Regardless, one thing we do know for sure is that smoking can kill you.
