Im in the process of recording my first proper home demo's which I will be sending off in the hope of recieving some attention. But - i would like to know how to copywrite my stuff before i bundle it off in the post.

Anyone?

Why the concern about copyrighting?

I can count on one hand the number of times anything significant has been ripped off.

Copyright is just another way to get $ out of people.

Like insurance. I guess it is insurance... you are insured you will be out $30.

:D

your work is already copyrighted by the action of creating it, in this country and many others. that said, if you're thinking of going commercial with any of it, it is reasonable to go through the red tape and pay the fee. submit everything you can at once, both in the most extensive form you can reasonably do in writing, and a cd of recordings if you have them.

Yes, once you have made a copy of it, date it and store it. Its your original. Also what you can do is pay the little copyright fee of copywriting a "studio" or "rec. label" name of your choice. and everything you put out, put it under your new "recording label", and stamp it with your new copyright info. What fun.

Yeah, you're automatically the copyright owner if you create a work, but I like the extra c.y.a. the actual copyright registration provides in case lightning were to strike me and one of my songs actually appeared in a television commercial or something.

You might also consider allowing time for the copyright to get processed before you decide to do anything comercially with your material. Since 9/11, the offices are really behind. My last copyright I sent in took 14 months for them to recieve, process, and send me my information back. But then again, that was december of 2001, so it might be quicker now.

thats not necessary because your copyright is effective the day they recieve it, no matter how long it takes to actually process it..........

They told us, that it was effective from the date they processed it. Because they recieve mail, and it goes into big piles before they get to it. Although, I guess if the material is truely yours, and if you were going to court, it would stand up, since you have the date postmarked, even if they havnt processed it yet.

Oy- those are some informative links.

Now I know why "ownership is 9/10's of the law."

90% of the law is ABOUT ownership!

Good stuff to know. Now I know which form to use and why.

Take care,
Chris
