How do I connect all this?

Ok, here's what I have:

Tascam 414
Marshall VS265 with left and right DI jacks
Boss compressor, EQ, delay pedals
and a zoom 505

I have tried mulitple combinations of hook ups but just get a nasty, buzzing distortion in the recorder rather than the clear distortion from the speakers.

Any help or suggestions with amp settings or levels would probably help too, I'm new.

Thanks,

Dude, I've had a headache for two days and don't know exactly what you've done, but it sounds like you're dangerously close to blowing the shit out of something.

Do you have any microphones? If you do, don't use the DI jacks on the amp. But, using them...
505 -> Amp -> DI lines to 414 1/4 inputs. I don't use a compressor, but I'm assuming you can hook it up to the 414 in an effects loop type deal.

Try recording your guitar directly into the 414, bypassing all the other gear, and see what happens. Work backwards until you find the problem. It's probably between the 414 and the amp.

thanks vurt,

that's exactly what it sounds like, like I'm about to blow the shit out of something.

I can plug my guitar directly into the "guitar in" on the back of the 414 and it sounds fine, but how do I hook up any effects? my amp is my only distortion. the zoom sounds the same.

every time I plug something (amp or zoom) into the mic/line inputs, it sounds way way overdriven.

I can't seem to get any sound by using the effect send 1 or effect 2 send / tape cue out or the 5-6, 7-8.

would a microphone solve all this?

D.

If your amp sounds the same whether or not you've got the 505 hooked up to it, you either don't have the two hooked up correctly, or the 505 is toast.

I really don't know much about recording guitar direct, but your problem sure seems to stem from that. I mean, you can do it if that how you want to, but something aint hooked up right. Using mics instead of going direct just sounds a hell of a lot better. Plus it's easier. I've had to go direct a few times and have had lots of trouble getting a usable signal. Oh, I've tried going direct from a 505 into a 424 too and it sounded like some violent crime was being committed. Shit, my head's still killing me and I'm rambling. Maybe someone more familiar with going direct can give you some better info, but I say go get some mics.

good luck
