How do I add vocals to an instrumental audio track?

Hi guys, I'm new to this whole recording thing and am unsure how to record vocals then add them onto an instrumental track. Like is there a way to hear the instrumental track and your voice (whilst actually singing) through headphones then add the recorded vocals to the instrumental track afterwards without recording the vocal and the instrumental track at the same time. I think this would give a better sound quality.

You need a DAW (Reaper, Cubase, etc.). If you have the instrumental open in the DAW, you can add a new track, and record vocals to the whole thing while listenting to the instrumental.
 
You also need an audio interface. Read the threads at the top of this section of the forum. DO lots of reading before buying anything.
