I'm a Behringer user and a huge fan of the brand so don't take me wrong when I say that the mixer is the wrong tool for the job.
What you really need is an audio interface.
That's the box, into which you plug your lines and microphones and will become your soundcard.
Expect to spend around $200 for a decent one or buy second hand.
Start by following this link to the most popular site for recording instruction.

Yep. An audio interface is what you need. It can be done with the mixer that you posted, but not nearly as efficient and your quality will suffer.

Get yourself one of these (or similar):

Tascam US-122

or

Presonus Audiobox

You'll be glad that you did.

That Tascam he posted is 200 dollars and has 4 channels. The Tascam US 800 will be released at the very end of this month. It has 8 inputs and it is only 50 dollars more....

$200?? The one that I linked is $129. You could probably find one used for around $75 or $80. Personally, I would go with the Presonus Audiobox, but I'm a Presonus fan. :)

Killing Sound

hey, im in the process of doing this, trying to interface. and im using whatever junk i got lying around.

first im wondering how bad rca cables are, because i got some older stereo gear, especally an equalizer, <nikko eq-25> in ma chain.
now i got a cable, cable <coax 75ohm> that i soldered rca ends on one end and 1/4 ts on the other to run from my mixer to my eq, then from eq to home stereo. <is a home stereo amp, a bad amp to use? why?> im trying to fix a yamaha nautral earth ax500u and i plan on using it when im done.

right now im choping up some more coax and i plan on running that from my eq to my computer from the other line out on the eq.
i understand its not the best way to do it, but at the monent i got limited options, in the future i plan on aquiring an audio interface.

so how bad am i killing my sound? im just trying to learn, so im not too worried about it, but i want to do the best i can.

also all the cables between chains are supposed to be instrument cables or xlr right? i tryed to look this up but the answer eludes me.

Thanks for you time

I would think that instrument cables would be better than coax, but if that's what you've got and it works then keep on doing it until you can get some proper cables.
