Recently I have been seeing some of my favorite artist using small to large keyboard/midi controllers, to add real time effects to there voice. Artist such as "The Mars Volta" "Tomahawk" and "Muse". Can anyone tell me how they do this? Its like the have certain keys bound to a certain effect. I have reason 2.0, can I do this with reason and any midi controller like the oxygen 8 from midiman?
 
I am not familiar with the groups that you mention, but is it possible that they are using vocoders?

Tomahawk uses around 2-3 microphones each ones with different effects, not sure which oens he uses. His keyboard is a Roland DJ-MkII sampler or something near that name. He also uses a theremin..not sure about the other guys
