im having a problem where I'll:
- record track 1
-take the record button off track 1 and select record on track 2
-attempt to record track 2 (while playing back track on super low in headphones so that the mic cant possibly pick up any sounds)
-when i look at track 2's waves it has everything in track one and plays everything in track 1 even though i'll mute track 1

even if i play nothing when recording track 2 it still records track 1 at the exact same volume etc it was orriginally recorded in.

the only way i can get it to work properly is if i mute track 1 when recording track 2. but by doing this i have no playback so im kinda lost as for playing things in the right spot

is there any way to fix this?

Sounds like a soundcard issue. Which card are you using?

The wav. output may be armed or something.
Internal routing would be the place to look.
If you choose the input in cool edit and the main stereo mix is being recorded that's the only other thing.

That sounds like you've got Track 1 selected as Track 2's input. What's your input for Track 2?

i am currently using the creative sound blaster audigy card. i've been plugging in my mics through the line in 2 input on the card. idealy i plan on using my mixer to do numerous tracks at once but for now im a beginnger so im just trying to figure out the basics to making everything work.

even if i play nothing and use the metronome in the program it records the metronomes sound.

Have you figured out how to select your input device when you're recording something? It's really important.

how do you do that? im recording all the tracks through the same device but just not at the same time

I've had this happen once in a while with Cool Edit 1.2. Seems to be a bug, because if I just exit the program and start it again I can record properly.

Right click on the track control panel right under the volume and pan displays and it will pull up the track properties. From there you can select your playback and recording device, as well as choose to record in stereo or mono.

i just set it so that both the playback and recording devices are the SB audigy (my soundcard that im recording into). now on the multitrack view for both track 1 and track 2 it says Out 1 and Rec1. I adjusted the settings so that my sound card was number 1. i tried recording and i still had the same problem

Hey foo-bu...
Try this...
Go to your windows kernell mixer, and click Options --> Properties --> Recording. Here you'll pick your recording source. Select Line in as the source, NOT "What U Hear". Now go record and see if it's helps.
:)

before reading this post i already had my settings that way. so far i have MIDI Synth, line in 2/mic 2, microphone, WAV/mp3 all selected.

Strange... Play Control lets you select many, but Recording Control will let you select only ONE recording source... are you sure you get there ?

Yup...Mr. Argo has a point there. You're looking at the wrong one. I'll be you don't have one selected in the RECORDING properties, b/c mine was doing the same thing, and it had none selected.

And since I'm in the mood lately for giving graphical help, here's a pic. The first one is the one you probably were looking at...the second one is the RECORDING properties.

And I'd personally recommend that you and everybody else use the "LINE IN" input as opposed to the "mic in"...it's cleaner.

THANK YOU!!!

Thanks very much that solved my problem!!! im more of a visual learner so thats what did it for me :) thanks again.

As for your comment about not using the mic in/line 2 as opposed to line in... would SPDIF also be the line in you are talking about? im new at recording and my external sound card only has the following options:

-SPDIF In
-SPDIF out
-Optical In
-Optical Out
-Aux In R & L
-Line In 2/ Mic 2
-MIDI In
-MIDI Out

thats all the inputs. i dont see a line in 1

SPDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) uses optical fiber for digital audio, not analog...(I think)...and I'm pretty sure that's an RCA input on your card, so I wouldn't think it would work.

Given the choices you have, use the "Line2/mic" input. It's probably an input at "line level," which means you should be fine using it...some "mic" inputs are for computer mics, and they have this obnoxious and crappy pre-amp associated with them, and they're just bad..LOL.

Hope this helps.

[edit] - The "aux in L&R" may be the primary line in, but it's probably split into Left and Right so you can run RCA cables to it, which is cool if you're recording from a tape deck or using some outboard effects unit with RCA outs on it. Otherwise, I'd stick with the Line in 2/mic input.
