For instance on the DELTA 66 card they market it as 6 in 6 out with 4 1/4 and S/PDIF with 2 channel PCM. What is PCM? What can I hook up to S/PDIF that will able me to record with a mic or instrument.

4 analog inputs and 1 digital I/O

you need a source that outputs digital to use the spdif

A total of 6 I/O's

Well i guess thats what im trying to figure out. Can you give me an Idea of some sources so I can go research them. Im looking for something simple.

The 66 is pretty simple. or the 44 or 1010
just more I/O's available.
or even more simple would be the audiophile 2496 PCI card.

The question is how many I/O's do you think you will end up using now and in future.

I believe that PCM's are merely the pathways between your hardware and your host software. i.e. Left PCM in 1/2 Delta, Right PCM in 1/2 Delta and so forth.

Thanks Al.;)

I've got to quit reading this manual. It screws me up every time I look in it.

There are lots of preamps with S/PDIF out (DBX386 for instance).
One of the cheapest solutions is TC Electronics M300. It's a $200 multi-FX box with digital out. You can use it a an FX box, or just use the bypass button and it becomes a pure A-D convertor. Very good for he price. That way, you can use any preamp you want.-Richie

So i guess what im really asking is what is the simpilist way to turn them into a 1/4 and or xlr so I can record live with it

chadsxe, I think you're not getting it... if you record live with it and you have a digital device with an S/PDIF port, you want to use that output and leave those tracks in the digital domain, thus keeping all four analog line inputs available for analog line level signals. That's the entire point of having that digital port.

Get an outboard A/D (Analog-Digital) converter with S/PDIF output, the AD converter will have 1/4" or XLR line inputs. Apogee makes some nice units.

M-Audio Tampa has SPDIF out, dunno how good the converter is but I'd guess it's probably good. Only £200 UK money. It's also an excellent preamp ... think I'm going to sort myself out with one in the summer!

What would be decent way to convert the 2 channels into XLR and or 1/4 for about 200 dollars. Because I really want the extra 2 channels out of the OMNI setup. You can record live from an S/PDIF right?

Yes, just as if it were an analog out so as long as you have the converter.

Why not get a card with all analog I/O or more I/O
assuming by your first post that you dont have a card or box yet...

Well because I dont have the money to buy a card with six analog I/O and six preamps. I have a budget of 350 dollars, and I trying to find a card that weill get me started but also when I want 2 I will be able 2 buy the extra pres and record 6 channels

Chad- Hello!! I already answered your question. TC Electronics M300, $200 at Guitar Center. You can plug any 2 line inputs from a mic preamp or DAW into the 1/4" ins of the M300. That signal comes out as either two 1/4" line levels (ins and outs are balanced, BTW), or by S/PDIF. S/PDIF is pretty easy. It's just a way to transmit 2 signals in the digital domain using basically one RCA male to RCA male cable. Get at least one well made digital transfer cable. Then the unit sending the digital signal and the thing receiving it must be matched for transfer rate and density. Try 44.1kz- it's CD friendly. Some boxes can have a master/slave unit tendency. (isn't that antiquated? I hereby emancipate all of Mr. Q's units, give them $50 and a camel) .
The M300 is pretty good at both analog to digital, *and *the reverse, with S/PDIF in and out, as well as midi. Aside from that, you get usable reverbs, a rudimentary compressor, a mediocre de-esser, good delay, as well as flange, slapback, pingpong. Really good A-D and D-A convertors are $600 and up. I've had good luck with Lucid AD9624. But- the M300 is as good at A-D conversion as the other cheap convertors, and you get a very useful effects box from a respected company known for high end FX, thrown in. I've used it as a cheap A-D box for a couple of years. It's quiet, makeup gain is usable, to a point, and it has never failed me. What's not to like? Best $200 box I have.-Richie

Wow, he's sold it to me ... $200 you say? At current exchange, that should be about £100. I've just checked and it's actually only £147, which by UK markup is ok actually! It might get added to my shopping list ... and should definitely be put on Chad's.
