How can I make my sound better?

With my Delta 66, when I direct in or mic in, the sound is usually very dull compared to the sound in the room (and this is a very small, dead room). Could this be because I need good preamps? Are the soundcard's preamps good?

I use a line 6 ax2 amp with an Ibanez, and a Shure SM 57 to record into Cubase.

yes.....get a small mixer if you need to for the preamps

The Delta 66 has no preamps. It has line-level inputs only.

Actually it does.... with the breakout box at least.

When i try the direct line in it also sounds like garbage though.

Yup you need preamps. I would find a nice Rackmount with S/PDIF outs, like DBX or Focusrite, and then you would still have the 4 1/4" inputs available for a nice 4 bus mixer. You could run your mics into the mixer and patch them to the Preamps and/or use the mixers onboard preamps.
