I need some ideas. If I had the budget to hire 10-15 drummers, take them to some cave and record on location with a couple of omnis, obviously that would be the ideal. Unfortunately that's out of question for me right now.
Basically I'm trying to get a big cavernous sound, giving the impression of a drum orchestra playing a complex polyrhythmic arrangement using samples. They will need to fill the entire soundfield left-right and back-front. Unfortunately all I'm ending up with is either a muddy mess or something that sounds paper-thin and lifeless.
To get an idea of the type of sound I'm talking about, think the scene from Matrix Reloaded (the second episode) where they're dancing/celebrating in Zion (the cave) after Morpheus' speech.
What I have to work with: Sonik Implants Silk Road sample CD for Kurzweil that has a lot of eastern drum samples, NSKIT drums and the samples that came with NI Battery 1, Kurzweil K2600 and SIR for convolution reverb. EQ, Compression is either done on K2600 or UAD-1.
What would you do given these resources?
