how 2 studio setup including motu 2408

Hi,
Just picked up a motu 2408 and looking for tips/advice on setting it all up. I have a peavy src1600 console (16 ch, 6 aux, 4 sub grp, phantom power, inserts on all channels) I running win 98 or win 2k on a p3 800, 512 Mb ram and usually using cakewalk sonar as a sequencer and cool edit pro. Any tips on how to configure this gear would be great. thanks alot
 
What do you want to configure it to do? There are endless options depending on tracking, mixing, track count, external processors, monitoring systems, etc.
 
First thing you must do to effectively run Sonar with the Motu is download wdm drivers from motu
The drivers will work great with Sonar under win98se,win 2000, BUT NOT WIN98 FIRST EDITION. These drivers will allow you to utilize the DXi soft synths in Sonar live,input monitoring ,and give you the lowest latency possible.

I've grabbed the drivers for win2k off the motu site. I am doing a clean install of win2k now. What I want to do is be able to track a drum kit (5,6 mics) simultaneously. then track the rest of the stuff. It would be nice to get at least 2 monitor mixes somehow.

I don't have squat for ref monitors yet, just a home stereo and or pc ($30) speakers. All fx will be directX stuff more than likely. I do have one outboard fx unit though (stereo) I forget the name right now but typical verb,delay, flange fx. I also have an alesis 32band stereo eq and a boss gp100 guitar processor.

I have a smaller 12 channel mixer too. 4 aux on it. Maybe it could be set up as the monitor board. I don't know yet.
Also I have a alesis sr16 drum machine, xb2 hammond, roland fp8, korg m1 and x3r and yamaha dx21 synths. yamaha stage custom drum kit, godin electric and takamine santa fe acoustic. no bass yet. probably get a friend to come track some stuff.

You guys can probably offer more advice based on this more complete gear round up.

Hopefully your mixer has direct outs with signal interuption to master buss;preferrably on all 16 channels considerring all the gear you have.You can get by with as little as six direct outs considering that the most mics you will be using on your kit.
Assuming the above scenario to be correct,patch your direct outs to the motu's analog inputs.
then patch as many of the motu's outs as you plan to use into the remaining unused mixer inputs.
patch your mains to your stereo

Setup the pci console
Setup cuemix or input monitoring in Sonar

Consider getting a patchbay,I don't use them but I think one might simplify your routings somewhat.

Run your line level stuff direct to the converters whenever possible,i.e.your keyboards

you ever heard of st. andrews, i use to go there for a couple a weeks during the summer for hockey camp.It's been a while though, just wondering if it is still open.

Ste Andrews is about 1.5 hours away. I've never really been there but I hear it's nice. Not sure about the Hockey camp but as far as I know a few friends went there too back in the day. I can skate but can't stop. ha.
My board has 4 xlr sub outs ands 2 xlr main outs. It's not a recording board but will do what I need it too for now. Can anyone recommend an affordable recording board and monitors? That would be a new post I guess.
At least this way I get 6 in thru the board and still have lots of room for all 8 outs from the MOTU. I'm gonna try to build a few walls in my garage for a makestift studio. I'll try to post pictures as I go but it won't be for a few weeks still.
Anyhow any other opinions are welcomed in getting the most out of this gear. I will run all line level stuff direct to the 2408, now i need some good mics and maybe a tube preamp, I have a couple sm57's and an EV mic. They'll get me by 4 now.

FYI Girvan,those inserts you mentioned in your first post probably double as direct outs as long you use mono 1/4" cords. You will have to check your manual to find out how far to push in the plug for signal interruption to the master buss.On my Mackie, all the way in ,to the second click,is the position for signal interruption to master.Then you can use the whole other half of your board to monitor,mix,mixdown,whatever....
