Some Rikenbacker basses came with stereo out for a while. I THINK it split the strings but can't recall - I did play one that was stereo once in the early 80's but can't recall - may nave been a mod.
Good job, but I really don't like the song - too much of it's time for me & not a good time at that!
maybe you could get some of the chime back on the 12 (I used a fanged pick - works for me!).

I agree with the guitar, its an early recording and I was only concerned about getting it in, I was more interested in the harmonies. But now that I have come this far, its time to re-record the guitar. I had guitar students tonight so its a bit late to start now. WHAT??? Too late for recording and mixing??? NEVER!!! Well, the day job requirements will do that to you... but tomorrow night is another ballgame...

Rayc, thank you for the comments but I wonder what happened to you in those times. They are times I wish I could live over and over and over... I relish the texture of the memories... but maybe I had a great life then. Its not bad now but I daydream about those years... these songs take me back there if only fleetingly
 
Really, really nice. I concur with the OP's feeling that the acoustic could be better recorded, it kind of washes over the track without having any real definition. I think the drums are spot on in volume and playing. The bass guitar could be slightly clearer (I don't mean louder) as it's playing some nice lines. But the real stand-out performance is in the vocals. So often tracks are let down by amateurish singing, whereas yours sound like a real pro singer - not overdone like some who think they're pros, but the simple quality sound of someone with a great voice singing the song naturally.

Ok sorry, I couldn't resist. I couldn't go to bed without cutting a new recording. There is always the risk that when you change something to make it better that you make it worse but I like this one better. I left the other version intact for comparison purposes.

Sounds great! I really enjoyed the vocals and harmonies :D. Top notch performance on everything else too. However, I cringed a bit when the guitar started, it blended in later on and I forgot about it. It sounded cheap. I've never home-recorded a 12-string before, so I'd seek others' advice here on the board. Drums might need a bump too - almost never hurts :).

Thanks for the comments Max, I dont know what to do about the guitar in that case, it sounds great to me but its the only 12-string I have. It was recently restrung and I used my two-mic recording method and blended those into what I thought was a good sound. When I played that back by itself, it seemed to be missing some body, so I mixed in a little of the original 12-string recording and that filled it out nicely I thought. The guitar is a Monterey, not a high-end guitar by any means but I didnt think it was bad and certainly wouldn't complain to the girl who gave it to me. Would appreciate suggestions from acoustic recording experts. I dont mind recording it again.
 
Listening to it now over and over as I do... starting to hear something in the opening bars, a kind of woody sound for want of a better expression. That might be what you are talking about. I wasnt strumming in my natural position for this guitar because during rehearsal (?) I kept hitting the bridge mic. Something will come I am sure...
 
I think I found it. When I first listened to the playback and thought it lacked body, I tried adding some low end to it. When that didnt give me a thrill I tried adding the other guitar and liked it, promptly forgetting about the added low end. Just listened to it now by itself and noticed the boost in low-end still in place... took that out and the "woody" sound went with it. See what you think...
 
Hmm... I'd love to listen to this, but I can't get the link to load. Am I the only one unable to get at the mp3?
 
Its not a common problem but someone else did have the same prob. He was able to right-click and "save target as"

I had the same problem. It must be something with our browsers, because everyone else seemed to be able to get it. I was able to hear it when I downloaded it, as opposed to streaming it.
 
It might be me. I use WMA Workshop to convert my wav files to mp3. When I play them in Media Player, they are fine but sometimes if I play them in Media Player from the web, it gets to the end and tells me there was a problem with the file. It could be that your browser is picking up this problem earlier. I would like to know if there is a more reliable way to produce MP3 files?
 
I have been using WMA Workshop for so long I haven't tried to find another way, even if it was right under my nose in the applications that I use. I just haven't had a reason to suspect it until now. But come to think of it, I have had very occasional comments that someone was unable to download my songs...

Just bought Xilisoft wav-mp3 converter... will see what that does...

Okay... I've listened to both versions... The 2nd guitar seemed a bit more spacious, perhaps. ... and as far as the whole "recording a mono source in stereo", it's done all the time. There are a few stereo-mic'ing techniques I use all the time without doubling the take. Even with a bass guitar. I've put one mic on the amp, and two mics on the guitar (one right there the plucking is happening, and the other on the neck), thus creating a stereo bass, with the meat amp signal coming in mono. I rarely use it, but it can be done. I rarely mic an acoustic guitar if it's not in stereo.

Anyway... Glad I was able to hear this, finally! (downloading it worked) Great vocals, man - spot on.

Thanks Poetic, if you listen to the original song by America, their first guitar is a 6 and is recorded mono, the second guitar when it comes in is distinctly a 12 and is fully left channel. I thought that was a bit extreme but I imitated the effect to some extent and put my second slightly left. I seem to hear a tempo increase in the original. They start slow but then pick up to the tempo I used all the way through. Might be my imagination, I havent timed it, just a perception.
