Hooking turntable up to mixer (grounding issue)

Hello all!

I have another question I hope you can help me with. I have a Yamaha MG 10/2 mixer that I am attempting to hook to a Stanton STR8-XX series turntable. I have always in the past used a receiver to send the turntable through , but now I am trying to consolidate and use my recording setup for capturing some of my records digitally.

My problem arises with the traditional grounding attachment on the rca jacks coming from the turntable. On a traditional receiver there is a screw down spot for this ground - not so on the mixer. So here are my questions:

1 - is the ground necessary?
2 - if it is can anyone recomend a small/cheap pre-amp or conversion box that can ground then send the signal back out?

You definately need a phono preamp, if for nothing else because it will apply the proper EQ curve so the record sounds like its supposed to.

I know a company by the name of "Project" makes a nice, small, relatively cheap one.
 
well, my SoundCraft Folio Notepad has a switch for that in the stereo track. That really doesn't help you though. But you might want to get a small mixer for traveling, that's why I have mine, and it just happens to have that switch.
 
You definitely need a phono pre. ART makes a good phono pre with the RIAA curve and it sells for about $40.

Oh, and that last signal flow chart looks correct.

Can you tell me a little more about "ART"? I am not familiar with the manufacturer.

ART (Applied Research and Technology) is based out of Rochester, NY and makes a variety of audio gear including eqs and pre-amps. Most people know them for the Tube MP which is legendary for being a crap mic pre but a decent bass DI fresh out of the box. I have their 355 (31-band dual-channel graphic eq) that works well enough with my P.A.

Anyway, check out their "DeeJayPRE." Includes power supply and grounding post.
