Ok, I was just awarded the newbie award and inducted into the Newbie hall of fame so bear with me.. I need cabling help and get easily confused. I currently have an Imac, Behringer 1202, and a Tascam 122mxl USB interface. My son in law hooked it up for me, but it runs interface first and then to the mixer. I want to run to the mixer first and then the interface. I understand that if I use 1/4 from the main mixer outs to the two available in's on the interface I can get the sound to the computer. What confuses me is how to run cables back to the mixer. My monitors will be off the mixer control out's if I understand it right. The Tascam has 2 rca outs but I am confused on how to plug that back into the mixer and where. If you do respond to this post, pretend I am 7 years old when you explain it:p Ex...."Put main mixer out to line in on interface) etc....:p Thank you in advance for any help you can offer. When I make it big, I will pay you 200 grand a year to do sound for me!:D:D:D

What do you mean runs to the interface first and then to the mixer?

Get a pair of RCA > 1/4" TS cables and hook up the line out off the Tascam to any pair of inputs on the Berhi. Hook up your speakers to the line output off the Berhi. Now you can control the interface output with faders on the Berhi. If you want to do overdubs you need to mute the speakers and use headphones to monitor so you don't wind up with a feedback loop of the speakers leaking into your mic.

Thank you for the reply. The current cabling is tascam out to behringer tape in via rca. The monitors run off the behringer control room outs. I also have pa speakers into the main outs of the behringer that I can shut on and off with one of the behringer switches. The mics are plugged into the Tascam. I was told that I should leave everything as is but I should also add an rca from tape out of the behringer to the 1/4 inputs on the front of the tascam. From what I was told, it would then allow me to do all mic and instrument inputs at the mixer instead of the limited inputs at the interface. Sorry but I am still in the learning stages of all this.. Does that sound correct? Thanks again.

Instrument -> Mixer -> Interface -> Computer. Unless your mixer has USB connections or you have a real soundcard.

Computer -> Interface (Monitors) -> Mixer (Monitors) -> Instrument. You can plug monitors into either the interface or the mixer with no issue.

My question is, do you need the mixer? You're making things a whole lot more difficult for yourself. Just run through the interface. If you're in the learning stage, just connect the interface to the computer, your speakers and headphones to the interface and start learning your DAW of choice.

Then, when you've figured out how to do everything you're trying to do inside the DAW, because everything you're trying to do CAN be done from within the DAW, setting up your mixer will be much easier.

Edit.
The whole point is to make music or recordings, not get frustrated with setting up a million pieces of gear, especially when you're still learning. You have to learn to crawl before you learn to walk.

I just have always ran my 2 keyboards 2 mics and acoustic through the mixer due to the available inputs. The Tascam is limited and I do a lot of plugging and unplugging. The mixer has always provided me with the additional outs for my PA speakers too. Of course I am open to all advice, and appreciate the response. My old setup with cakewalk and the emu card just seemed easier to me. Thanks again Michael:)

Well, there is 2 RCA tape ins on the Behringer, yea? You could go from the Tascam RCA outs to the Behringer RCA tape ins... Then there should be a button for tape to control and tape to mix, right?
