homestudio or pro audio

from what i can gather from their site i would imagine that the Homestudio 9 is a package made up of Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 with the Fx1 and Fx2, gigasampler etc thrown in.

In that case the pro audio 9 part is the same. The effects addons and the Gigsampler would be an added advantage though if you can afford it.

cheers
John.

well i want to record mainly hip hop and techno. I have a xp 10, mc 505, dr sp 202, and dr groove 202, and i want to reocrd vocals too.

John Sayers is thinking of the Cakewalk Pro Suite... Home Studio is a somewhet crippled version of Pro Audio, as others have indicated.

Here's an informative link:

If your needs are fairly simple this version is probably fine. There are others in its price range to consider -- Cubasis, n-Track...

Seems to be some pretty knowledgeable folks on this thread, and it's related to my question so maybe someone can help me: I want to record 4 audio tracks at once, each with its own channel. Can I do this?

I have CW HomeStudio 9.00, a Gadget Labs Wave/496 card, and a Mackie 1402-VLZ Pro.

I'm not familiar with your card, SOWM, but all you have to do is set each track to a separate input. i.e., if you were just running a regular ol' soundblaster card with a stereo line in, just set one track to the left side in, and one track to the right side in, and, voila, two similtaneous inputs!

You can also listen to what you've already recorded while you record the other two tracks if your card is "full duplex" (can play back and record at the same time)

Hope that helps some....

Yeah, that gets me up to 2, but what about 4 tracks at once? My card has 4 inputs, so should be no problem there. But in the Options/Audio settings of Cakewalk, I can only set my recording source to either "Wave 1/2" or "Wave 3/4". If I set it to, say, "Wave 1/2", then in my track properties I can choose from "1/2 Left" or "1/2 right", but can't access inputs 3 or 4 at all.

Seems to me there ought to be a way to get to all 4 inputs at once, otherwise what's the point of having 'em?

I'm a little confused. Can't you do this:

Set two tracks to use Wave 1/2, two to use Wave 3/4;

In the pair set to use Wave 1/2, have one set to 1/2 Left, the other to 1/2 Right;

In the pair using Wave 3/4, have one set to 3/4 Left, the other to 3/4 Right.

No. Right now, when I click on Track Properties and open the Source drop-down list, I get the following choices:

"Left Ch 1/2 Wave/496"
"Right Ch 1/2 Wave/496"
"Stereo Ch 1/2 Wave/496"

plus a bunch of MIDI channels. I don't get to choose Ch 3/4 at all, unless I go to Options/Audio and set Record Wave Device to "Ch 3/4 In Wave/496" - in which case I won't get to choose Ch 1/2 in Track Properties!

In other words, Cakewalk can apparently only see 2 of my card's inputs at a time.

we might ought to make this a new thread...

Okay, SOWM, try this series of clicks: Options, Audio, and then the Drivers tab.

Now, highlight both your Ch 1/2 and your Ch 3/4. Make sure BOTH are highlighted. I had the same confusion with my Maxi Studio Isis. After you do that, click OK and see if you can get all 4 inputs then.

yeeouch! This is a tough one...

Well, SOWM, you may be SOL. (pardon the pun).... I've never worked with Home Studio 9. I've got Pro Audio 9, cause I needed more tracks. The assumption I made was that Home Studio and Pro Audio had the same settings available. but... I guess not.

Try these resources, and maybe they can help:
1. The Cakewalk Newsgroups
Your have to to go Cakewalk.com, and look for them, but the folks there are much more knowledgable than I

2. Garrigus.com
Scott Garrigus wrote a book called "Cakewalk Power". Now, I've been using cakewalk for 6 years, and this guy showed me things I've never seen. I've seen him lurk on these boards occasionally, but you'll be sure to catch him there. He may have just the solution.

Sorry I couldn't help. Maybe after the "newbie" status wears off, my brain will kick into gear!

After a lot of web searching, including the sites you suggested, I FINALLY got an answer. According to Gadget Labs (manufacturers of my soundcard), I can record 4 tracks simultaneously in Pro Audio, but not in Home Studio. Although this has not yet been confirmed by Cakewalk (can you say "slow response"?), I have gone ahead and ordered the upgrade. Sure hope it will work - will post results here when I have 'em.

Thanks for your help, all - and notice I've now brought the thread back to its original topic!

BTW, anyone wanting to know what SOWM means, check out my site at http:/www.ronc.ronc.net.

For what it is worth, I have Pro Audio 9 and a Gadget Labs Wave 824, and I have no problem recording 8 tracks at once. Your card will have no problem recording 4 tracks at once in Pro Audio, but I have no hands-on with Home Studio.

Update, as promised: got Pro Audio 9, it records 4 channels at once with no problem. I'm very happy with the software, BUT I think it's worth mentioning, I have STILL not received any response from Cakewalk to the original question I sent them, what, two weeks ago? Not what I'd call great customer service.

I also ordered Scott Garrigus' book, and found it very useful - covers a lot of the same ground as the PA9 manual, but more "user-friendly" with lots of explanations, examples, etc. Worth the money.
