homemade mics

I don't know how many people that read this BBS read tape op magazine, but in the last(?) issue they had a way to make homemade mics. Two of the parts in it had to be ordered on the internet, but most were attainable at Radio Shack and a hardware store. They cost around $20 a peice and they sound very real. they are great mics. If anyone would like the specs, I will gladly email them to folks. (dutle@nku.edu)
 
Wow that's pretty cool....though the mic's kinda look like something from the Adam & Eve catalog :)

So how do they sound..can you give us a comparison that we can relate to?

Necessity is the mother of invention. You must be a clever guy. We could have used you on some of the design teams I have been involved with. If you're not already into engineering, maybe you should check it out.
 
the only thing (i'm a student-kinda poor) I have to compare the homemade mics to are SM-57s and 58s and a Peavey PVR-1. They are not anything like 57 or 58s. I think they are better ambient "room" mics than the PVR I got for $50 used. They are kind of treblely, but that is able to be overcome through good equalization. For the price, i found it worth making a couple of them.

FYI-I didn't design these....they were in an issue of tape op.

P.S. Tape Op is a great magazine. It has a lot of ways to go with whatever recording equipment you have. It is much in the spirit of this site. go to http://www.tapeop.com to subscribe for free.

Doc here.....im a firm believer in home made mics.........and they dont have to be ugly...i use PVC pipe with great results.......if anyone is interested...email me for pics and diagrams on how to make them............
 
k screw up on the last reply......new to this board.........anyway,home made mics DO NOT need to be ugly.......i can send pics of my homemades if anyone is interested.....and tell you how to make them(the cases)its not hard,and not expensive.......my email is tuofus3198@aol.com............
