i was actualy thinking of pluging in my home theater system, not sure if it will work yet. I have a sony 275 watts 5 speakers 40 watts each, and a sub 75 watts, its supposed to be hifi. will this work? will it be better then pc speakers?

The sub, at the very least, will give you a coloured reproduction of what you record UNLESS you are recording specifically for sub use.

To some extent, the answer depends on your target. How is the target audience going to listen to the results, what do they expect, and where will they listen?

If you are recording for yourself and plan to listen to the result on your home system, then that could be a good combo. If you're recording for a hip-hop audience, then perhaps not. There is a lot of inbetween.

okay, I'm assuming we're using the home theater speakers for mixing

get rid of four of those speakers, because you won't be able to even use them unless you're doing surround sound for something. better than PC speakers...probably, however you haven't mentioned which speakers you're talking about.

Well, most likely your stereo will be a better option than computer speakers, especially because of the *major* advantage that you (I assume) know how they sound, and how commercial CD's should sound on it...
I would definitely take Benny's advice and only monitor in stereo without the sub - of course this may then mean you don't 'know' your system as well anymore, but all the more excuse to spend 3 days locked in your house listening to your favorite albums 24-7 ;) !

i sell home theater systems at circuit city and i'd say its not a great idea. never liked the sony systems and theres a huge lack of frequency response in the mids.
