I've been recording on a Yamaha MD 4 ( minidisk ) for the last 5 years and am finally looking to invest in some recording software for a Dell PC with windows XP and a soundblaster soundcard.

I'm looking to commit some home recordings to a good standard
of production (own guitar based songs with synth support and vocals, theatre soundscapes and possibly some dance) within a budget that doesn't require me to sell all my instruments! Sound familiar? Anyway, I'm wondering what people recommend? There's such a black hole of products out there!

So far, the Cakewalk Home studio 04 XL looks a good bet for the price. I see alot of Sonar users on the forum and wonder at the step up. The Yamaha MD 4 has midi and RCA line outputs will I need another interface? If so what would anyone recommend for this? What are the drum options like on the XL?

The other route is a little pricier but I have a some trusted friends who swear by cubase and studio seems the one closest to my budget. Is it worth the extra to pay?

Thanks to anyone who replys.

What do you think the answer is going to be when you ask this question in the Cakewalk forum?:p

HS2004XL is basically the same feature-wise to Sonar 2 minus some features here and there. Anyone who isn't a professional making serious money off the software wouldn't miss the features.
