home stereo speakers

hey guys-

im back! i got some therapy by the way. i dont wanna go into the details, but im in better shape mentally then i was. anyways...down to business.

i'm gettin some new stereo speakers in the $300 range. bookshelf;s with 6 1/2 inch to 8 inch woofers. basically, what i'm lookin at is either the JBL s38II, the Polk Audio RTi38, somethin from kipilsch, or however you spell it, or infinity, or cerwin vega. I haven't gone and listened to any yet, and im just gettin what people think before i do. so have at it guys! i know some of those aren't in that range retail, but i got some good pricing.

If you want a small system in that price range check out the Klipsch Pro Media system. It's mainly sold as a computer speaker system but it's THX certified and it rocks. They have a 2.1 and a 5.1 setup.

Except for the promedia computer type speakers there's no such thing is there?
 
can anybody recommend specific models? and not restricted to those brands either. keep it between 300 and 600 retail.

and im really not wanting to go the whole subwoofer/satellite route. it's all about full range. lol. i have seen those kipilsch 5.1 speakers before. they're not bad i must admit. just not what im goin for. i just need two speakers which will be mains. I may add a sub later, but most likely not.

I would suggest you check out the "Monitor" series by "Paradigm". I used to own the Mini Monitors and Monitor 7's and thought they were great speakers for the $$.

Sorry for changing the subject slightly but, on the subject of stereo/entertainment speakers for use as monitors...I've got a set of Klipsch Heresy speakers. Very nice home stereo speakers but I've since replaced my HS gear and now I've got these rather nice speakers sitting around. The question is, should I or could I use them as monitors for mixing purposes?

They're no self powered of course so I would have to run audio out of my mixer into an amp then to the speakers. I guess a lot would depend upon the type of amp used.

i dont think the amp would matter that much. they're usually fairly flat. you can use them for mixing, but you better know them really well. and it may prove to be difficult. have you ever tried to mix anything on bose speakers!? it is such a pain in the ass. those things are so screwy.

Hey Sub...sounds like you know your speakers...I was going to ask if my Klipschorns would work but I simply don't have room for them in my studio. Sorry,...neither the Heresey's or the Horns are for sale.

I am however considering letting my Harmon Kardon Citation 11 and 12 go... a new set of tube as good as new. But that's another forum isn't it?

I'm not sure khorns would make good monitors. But they are so fucking loud they send chills up my spine....
I'd love to have a pair!
I've got the legend series on my theater now, and I love them, but I blow em alot. Gotta love that 5yr warranty!
 
I heard that (just barely). For sure the KHorns won't...just to hear them in their glory, you really have to crank it up. It gets a little old when working through a mix.

I've went ahead and hooked up the Heresey's. The bottom sounds very rich while the highs very clean (almost too clean). I say this comparing to my M-Audio Studio Piles SP-5B's. Any thoughts on the comparison. The M-audios vs. the Klipsch?

I've never heard the maudio's... But if there were a home loud speaker that was suited for monitoring I think the heresy's would be a good candidate.
 
I hear the B&W's are quite flat and could be used for monitoring.

Supposudly a very nice brand of speakers.
 
i want one of those nautilus deals. a bit out of my price range i'd say. somethin like $42k i hear.
 
Energy makes some nice speakers.

I have the surround (diecast wall-mountable) version of these Boston Acoustic speakers. At $325 each they're a little pricey, but they absolutely rock.

In the end, you really need to take a couple of your favorite reference CDs into some different stores (take some Bach and some Rock), go back and forth comparing for a day or so, and then just pick what you like. Your ears will definitely make a decision for you.
