hello,

i have a Tascam Portostudio 424, At2020 condenser mic, and some editing softwear, i have the wire that goes from computer into mixer, and mic into mixer..but for some reason i am not getting the vocals on my computer..im a noob at this, im not never good with computers..i am just trying to make this work....can anybody help please?

I'm not too sure from your post what you are trying to do. The 424 is a 4 track cassette recorder so I'm not sure where the computer comes in to play.

umm....well.. ok..what i am trying to do is....

Get vocals from a professional mic, into my computer...
i went to a music store, they told me i needed something, but i ignored them cuz cost about 300$, i have no money to put in..all thethings i am using wer lent to me...and what they told me was i needed that and this other wire i have, that goes from mixer to computer, what im trying to do is use the tascam 424 thing to get my vocals into my computer....

:S

plug mic into porta. line out of porta into line in of your pc sound card NOT MIC IN. check carefully. THEN in windows volume control ensure you have in the volume applet RECORDING DIALOGUE line in selected and the fader is up.
in the playback applet of volume control ensure you have wave out fader UP
and not muted. peace.

respect, thank you ..i figured out i had the wrong wire to my comp..it was the Big ones..and they only fit in the stero inputs.. the outputs are smaller..

thx gain...

The mini-jack line in on your sound card will be a stereo one. Just stick an adaptor on it.

does ne one know whhat the size im looking for, or what its called

"from the same input as a comp mic, or hadset..into a stero one"

thats all i need :S ..ne clues ne body ..

PS. Ty noisedude

I can't remember the numerical size ... might be 1/8th"? Anyway - it's walkman headphones size, so you'll need an adaptor to change a 'stereo guitar lead' (if you can call it that!) to a 'walkman headphones' size. HTH!!

yea, the wire i got is already in "walkmen" size, now i need it to be stero size to fit the sound card IN.

or is it one of the 3 holes for ..mic, headset ..ext, as the soundcard IN?

see my problem is, i am only guessing where the soundcard IN is :S

tekz,

ty

I'm confused what you're asking now!!! There line in on your soundcard is one of those three. I can't remember what colour, but definitely NOT the lime green one, which is your headphones/speakers output from the computer.

lol sorry man....

here is my situation...

i have a tascam Portostudio 424 8 track, mic, and a computer

i am trying to get ..the Vocals from the mic, into my computer to be edited and made into music..

i dont know what cud be the problm, i dont know what i am doing that well..i know my way around the computer, but i dont know the names of everything lol

i have been around the city in music stores, here and there..i have all the wires, and equipment i need, ( SO they told me )

:s hope this clears it up,

ty again

Ok - well you just need to plug in a cable from one of the outputs of your Tascam into the back of your computer and then you will be away. What part of that is not working?

i have...

- Pluged in the wire into the tascam OUTS
- pluged the wire into the computers Soundcard IN
- Mic pluged into the Tascam
- Line in checked on windows volume control
- tascam works fine alone

becus its an 8 track, do i have to record to cassette..than to comp?

cuz what i have been trying to do is get the vocals from the mic thru the tascam into the comp, as raw vocals..

there are 2 Outs on the back of the tascam..does it matter if i use both or one..cus i have the wire that uses both..

I've never used one of these things so I can't help you, but people have discussed using the mixer section on its own before. 'Fraid you're going to need someone else to chip in now!

sounds like a software problem to me. What editing program are you using?

cool edit :s

i found an old tape in the cassette, it works...and records to cool edit :S

but what i record wont, i can hear it faint in the backround with lots of static and shit

Aaa yes, thats what the lady at the music store said, she was trying to offer me this 258$ thing for that, n im broke..imjust tryina make music i aint got a budget to make things perfect lol

is there ne other way to get phantom power?
and does my tascam portastudio 424 8 track thing not have it?

ty very much, everyone in this place is saving my life more than they know =)

Being that the Portastudio doesn't have phantom power and the mic needs it, you are in a bit of a quandry. Actually, it's no big deal. Pick up an audiobuddy mic preamp from m-audio for $50-$80 new or used or $50 for a little behringer mixer. Be warned though... Audio Technica mics are usually very finnicky without adequate phantom power, and being budget gear, both of these could be suspect. Once you have a preamp inline (something w/phantom power) you can do away with the Portastudio entirely.

Well this being the case, I'd go and pick up a Behringer UB502 or UB802 right away. Forget the Tascam because what it costs you to get a phantom power supply will be almost that of one of the little micro-mixers.
