Hello,

Call me crazy but I want to build a Home recording studio. I got the room already, but I am lost when it comes to gear.

I have a BR-864, a good vocal mic, and some CM-88 for overhang/cymbal mics.

I am thinking about $999.99($1000 looks too big) budget over the next 2 years. I will be doing these in steps, so let me know what I have to improve over time. I figure I need atleast 16 Mono channels.

I am thinking:

Mixer: Behringer Eurodesk MX2442A Mixer
Recorder: Boss BR-864(Already Have)
Mics:
Drum: Nady DMK5 5-Piece Drum Mic Package
Overhang: Nady CM-88 Condenser Microphone(Have 2)
Vocal: MXL MXL 990 Cardioid Condenser Mic with Shockmount(Have 1)
Guitar: R-11 Microphones(Need 2 atleast)

DI Box:???
Monitors:???
Besides, small things like windscreens pop filters cables stands headphones

What should I get

2 room recording, Control room and live room....

I am looking to record bands like:

Vocalist
Guitar 1/Vocals
Guitar 2
Bass
Drummer

So what other equip should I look into getting... I am going to do this over time so please let me know what I should get... I am open to any suggestions links or anything...

Thats crazy talk!

999 over two years? i would go miwxerless if your going to be spend that little.

Heheh.... I think I have 999 bucks invested in cables alone in my home studio. :)

999 bucks! you build a studio for that much then tell me where you shop!

You realize that the BR-864 only does 2 tracks recording simultaneously right? That means that you'll have to mix everything down to stereo and commit that mix to tape. If you're just messing around recording yourself that might well do it. But if you are interested in doing more, I would recommend something that'll record at least 8 in simultaneously.

I would recommend against the Beri mixer. Their products are hit or miss and the mixers are miss more often than not. I've had 2 personally that crapped out without reason, and have heard many others with similar experiences. Go with a smaller yamaha MG mixer, you won't really need all that much mixing horsepower, mostly just more flexible routing than your recorder already has and maybe a handful of additional preamps that come with the mixer.

Also Nady doesn't have the highest rep either, though I personally have never used any. I suggest that you compare the Nady drum pack with the Audix Fusion pack. I love my Fusions, and they seem solid (one of my condensers dropped from an overhead stand once onto a cement floor and still worked fine)

For cheap monitors try the M-Audio stuff, can't really go wrong with that company, they offer some serious value. Overall, just take you're time and do research. Read reviews, but more importantly read what real people are saying (like the equipment forums here). Good luck, it's a lot of fun collecting gear, just don't forget to record too!!

well, put this into the equation im 15 with my only jobs are working concerts and ebay.

I don't know much. I want to do Guitar, Guitar, bass, drums recording, then with that do vocals.... how do I go about doing this? what kind of recording console and programs would I need? You gonna say start small, but I really just don't want to... I love recording and making music.. and I can't be stopped so how do I go about doing this on a budget?

and to the man who has $1000 in cables.....

yeah.... :p

It's easy to rack up thousands of bucks in cabling if you have a 24 channel HD recorder, a 24 channel/8 buss mixer and a patchbay between the two. Every connection has to be made twice. Then I have a bunch of synths running to the patchbay.

Before you know it you have a ton of 8 channel snakes and a good snake isn't cheap, especially if you need 20 or 30 feet like you will.

cloneboys right ya know.

But anyway your bein very unrealistic with wanting to be able to record everything on that kinda budget but we will give you all the help possible, whats your computer situation?

The cheapest route I can imagine is a 400 dollar Dell, maybe 90 bucks on Cubase, maybe 200 on a sound card, 250 on a Mackie CR1604, and two SM57's mics to start with.

From there you could build up an okay setup over time. But until you dropped that 1000 bucks you couldn't record a fart.

Yeah, besides...what would you do with all that stuff if you don't? You've already got the gear...make a few bucks or don't...I guarantee you'll learn something.

I have a shit soundcard... with A emachines, 80gb hard drive... CD Burner and other standerd stuff...I had some music programs but one of my teachers stole them, and basicly refuses to give them back...

then what is realistic for a low budget studio?

lets put it this way... what kind of equipment would I need to get a studio going? and how? Mixers, mics, recording console, rack gear, ect...

Ok Im sure many people will disagree with me here but I was using a digi 001 with pro tools since i started and its easy to use and sounds pretty good, your sound card wouldnt come into the equasion as you dont use it with the 001, pro tools comes with the 001 and you could probably pick up 1 off eBay for 500, then get a good condencer for vocals and an sm57 unless the mics you have really are good enough in which case get a sm57 only.

That should leave you with 200\400 for extra ram and\or a pair of lower end monitors.

I assume you ment (samson) for the R11s, use them for cymbal mics, they lack the depth for guitar. Not that they are bad mics, they are just a bit trebbly and sound thin and tinny when used for guitar.
