I need some advice! I currently have Cakewalk Home Studio 9 installed on my pc with Windows 98. I am very new at trying to record using my computer. I have had some problems in the past trying to figure out how to use Cakewalk. Is there a better software out there that is easier to use with more capabilities. Basically, I use it to do demos and to learn more about recording.

All the major software apps have demos you can try to find one that suits you.I like n-track studio,an inexpensive little program with lots of features. Here's a link if you want to try that one

I was a cakewalker for a few years and find this one more intuitive (like real analog gear)so I switched over.

Cakewalk is generally regarded as "one of the easier programs" as far as learning curves goes. (Thus the name...) If you've got that one, the alternative programs aren't going to be so much easier to justify the $ spent to change.

I have the book Cakewalk Power and have been trying to make my way through it. When I say I am new at home recording, I am VERY NEW. The main problem I have been having with my cakewalk is getting the volumes right. I am not sure where they should be set to get ready to record. Halfway, all the way up or where I'm not sure? What has happened is that when I record my guitar and voice through my line in, when I go to play it back, it is really quiet. My volume has been set 3/4 way up prior to recording. I really haven't gotten much farther than this in trying to figure out how to use cakewalk.

Changing software may or may not help you here....when you say the volume is 3/4 up does this mean on the soundcards software mixer?...try bringing it all the way up....im sure Cakewalk has meters for recording and you are looking to get your signal as close to 0db without hitting it......also, are u using any type of preamp between the guitar or mic and the soundcard.....

If you're still looking to switch, you will find plenty of opinions on software in this thread.
