Ok my band is trying to do a computer recorded demo and Im in charge of getting drum mics. I definitely want the AKG D122 and my is friend is letting me borrow his SM57 for snare. I need to figure out what I should use for overheads. If anybody knows of a condencer that good for drum overheads and vocal that would be a lot of help.

If you can only have one, maybe an Octava MC-319. It's kind of a dark sounding mic. It's among my favorite vocal mics and I've used it as a mono overhead in the classic "two drum sticks from the center of the snare" method and it worked pretty well there too. The D-112 is a good choice for kick and the 57 on snare is a classic.

What's your budget? If you could do the Octava and a pair of Octava MC-012's with the cardiod capsules or a pair of MXL603's.

I'd skip the Octava's completely and buy a pair of Studio Projects B1's (large diaphragm condenser). They sound great on vocals, acoustic guitar, drum overheads, and most anything else you put them on. At $79 each, they're the biggest bang for the buck IMHO.

But if you want to stay with a low cost small diaphragm condenser, I'd agree with Track Rat on the MXL-603s at $49 each.

Last time I checked they were still running around $70-80 each.

id get the 603's for drum overheads at $49 each (1 for mono, 2 for stereo)...then get the Marshall MXLv67 or the Studio Projects B1 for vocals @$79......

if you wanna save some $$$$ go with the AT ATMPRO25 on kick instead of the D112.......

My budget for the Mics is anywhere from about $250-$350 maybe $400 if I can push it. I don't want to go the wrong route and get bad mics.

Hmmm, if that's your budget for overheads, a few more possibilities...

2 MXL 603's $100
2 Studio Projects B1's $160
2 Behringer ECM8000's $80
Total $340 - gives you 3 sets of overheads to try, all good mics

or

2 Studio Projects B-3's $320
Multipattern mics, gives you the option of trying all sorts of different stereo techniques (M/S, xy, Blumlein (?sp), spaced omnis, spaced cardioids, ORTF, NOS etc)

or
2 Oktava MC012's $200
+ vocal mic eg V67G or B1 $80
Total $280

A few choices. I have and love the MXL 603's.

I keep hearing good things about RadioShack PZM. Whats the skinny on those?

Song for Girls.

great song btw.

Where you from in Texas?

My setup isn't up the par, 3 radioshack tom mics, 2 SM57, MXL v93M (overhead, mono i know :() 1 SM58 (kick) actually works well if placed right.

chomsky I'm in the dallas area if you would like I could let you take a test listen on the oktava 012's (pair hand matched by me (ain't saying much but they sounded about the closest out of the 10 or so i listened to when i a/b'd then)) and an oktava 319. add @hotmail.com to my username or im me on aim or msn messenger. (same as username on both counts)

Good choices, you got my vote, I'll second that.

Drum Mics

Nathan,

What band are you in? Are you in Dallas? I have a home studio in Dallas for my band Goodwin. I have used several different mics for overheads effectively. A Audio Technica makes a good overhead mic, as well as a great all purpose mic AT4033a. I am currently using a pair of Audio Technica AT4047's now. Depending on the size of your kit and the sound you are going for, you can get away with one mic as your overhead. You can hear a 3 mic drum kit setup on our first recordings using a Groove Tube AM40 on the snare, Crown CM700 on the hi-hat and a single AT4033a as an overhead at www.meetgoodwin.com. Everyone else's suggestions are very good as well. Good Luck.
