Hello all,

I'm going to be recording some pieces on the French horn for a mail in audition. I'm away at college, so my resources are limited. I've decided against paying for a professional recording session as my dad has offered to come into town with some of his equipment (he is a video producer and has a few mics) and record me at a friend's house.

I was hoping someone could give me a few tips on recording the horn; it tends to be very boomy in large rooms and has a dark sound. What sort of room would be best to record in? What position should the mic be in in relation to the instrument? I couldn't tell you exactly what kind of equipment I'll have to use, but I believe my dad will be using either the attachment mic on his camera, a boomstick or a decent hand held mic... Are there any thoughts on this as well?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ive done these for a few since they downsized our philharmonic...a DVD video is even better.

If you are at a college there should be a few treated rooms you could reserve...try to rent a KSM32 they are great on brass...but if your room isnt the best a beyer M69 is what was used on those Chicago records...I wouldnt want to just use a shotgun mic but it would be better than an onboard camera one...tell your dad that a decent stereo field recorder would be a cool purchase for his rig...a Zoom H2 would do very well here and they are not very expensive.

Maybe a member here is near-bye and will help you out...that would be the best case scenario...where are you right now?

Well the application specifically calls for a CD and states that no DVDs will be accepted...

I never even thought about renting a room at the school; I'll definitely look in to that. I'm at UT Austin right now. I do know UT offers recording sessions that run at $50/hr, but I haven't seen anything about renting a room.

Again, my budget is very tight, while it isn't ideal I may just end up recording at a friend's house.

Id just use an unoccupied room...I know that at JCCC here I could just go in and use a room.

You are in Austin and there are plenty of members from the Austin area...just seek them out and PM them...theres no reason one of us cant handle taking care of this for you.

I'm in Austin, but I don't think I can help out. Send me a PM anyway and let me know the details.

peace,
