Could you make a home-made popless/ pop filter that goes in front of the mic with a coat hanger and some pantyhose? Just bend the hanger in the shape of a circle, and possibly stretch some pantyhose over it?

You sure can! I've still got three homemade pop filters sitting around here somewhere made from those same materials. They work very well. I only got store bought ones 'cause I was sick of using tape to attach them to my mic stands.

i found the best thing to use is to wrap a cable tie right under the head of the mic, the place where u speak into (just clarifying, not that ur an idiot or anything ;) ), and punch a hole through a dust mask, like one that u would buy at Lowes or Home Depot, and use that about an inch from the head, it looks and works like a charm.

Without sounding like a complete noob (im in the right forum) but what will this achieve? Better sound, less noise?

Pop screens are used to help prevent "P" popping sounds. They are effective for use on condenser microphones for this purpose. They also help cut down breathing sounds, etc.

Is use the homemade creation in the photo I've included here. Simply nylon stretched over a plastic ring. Has worked well for it's intended purpose. I'm too cheap right now to spend $15-25+ on a "real" one.
