I for one do not use a desk microphone!

Just a mic, a preamp, and a Mac.
Okay sorry about that. I actually also use stand, pop filter, headphones, XLR cable, and yeah my bad I meant interface when I said pre amp. Looks like I'll have to be more careful when I post. Sorry about that. So, let's see. You've managed to do without:
-stand for the mic
-a pop screen for the mic (not needed if you refrain from breathing or singing any words with plosives in them)
-a cable to link the mic to your pre amp
-a cable to link your pre amp to an interface (yeah, even with a Mac you need an interface. Contrary to what the cult of the Apple says, their built in inputs are horrendously noisy, even worse than many PC cheapies) Or did you mean interface when you said pre amp?
-software for the Mac to record and mix with
-monitor speakers so you can hear what you're ACTUALLY mixing rather than the fake sound headphones will give
I'm not trying to be nasty but a lot of people just starting out take stuff they read here as gospel--so it's worth being as accurate as possible.
