Anyone wanna help me master this?

Hi,
I'm not sure if I have found the right forum for this but I'll put it here anyway. Right, I am looking for one of you fine people who would be willing to help a poor frustrated, on-the-verge-of-breakdown young lad master a song (or 4 ideally! lol).

Right, a bit of background info. I am in a band called Malevolus, www.malevolus.com and we have been together for a few years, just as fun to start off with but we are trying to go at it a bit more seriously now, anyway, after lots of requests and us feeling the need for it, we decided it was time to record a demo. So, about 6 months ago we got the 4 songs ready that we wanted to get recorded and gradually (until a week or so ago!!) we managed to record our seperate parts in our spare time, blah blah blah.

We have got no money! That is the main thing before I go on any further, if we did have enen a few quid between us we would pay for someone to do something with this for us!

So, I've got the tracks, and I've done a mix of the first song, called musical warfare,
and it sounds really muddy and horrible, and, although I like the sound, it doesn't sound right against other people's recordings. Now, I am now mastering master!! or sound engineer or anything like that, I am a Bass player who is the only member of the band who isn't too lazy/buisy to do this!

Next, I downloaded a version of Izotopes Ozone and yes it made it sound a lot better, but still not exactly 'proper' sounding, I mean I can't put it in a playlist with other bands tracks and not notice the difference easily (you know what I mean).

What I'm asking of you; Basically, please, please, please can someone help me out and do a master of it?? Although I can't pay you I would appreciate it more than anything else ever and would give you LOADS of credit on the CD etc. This now seems really cheeky and rude, but if possible could you also do it to the other 3 tracks we have to get the same sort of sound (they are not quite ready yet though).

Basically if someone could give me any help they would make my life worth living, as a lot of people want the demo (ie. a skate video and various magazines etc) and I really can't send them that!! I you need them I could even put each individual track for each song etc up (the originals before I started playing with them) etc, etc. Whatever you want I'll do it.

Also anyone's opinion on this horribly muddy song! ie potential??

once again you can get it from

Thankyou so much for even reading this post, I love you!!

Cheers

don't worry I'm not being impatient!

I just read the post and realised I missed something out. I would alos appreciate any help you could give me as to what would be best to do, especially with Ozone! EG Boost the Mid Range or Compress the bass part like so... tada! Help!

Bugger!

Ah, no replies yet! and I spent about an hour typing that really long nice post! lol

Anyway, has anyone even listened to it?

Cheers

I think going back and doing a remix (if possible) would help things much better. Mastering isn't really your answer. I think you need to get closer with your tracks first. You can't bring out the drums without affecting the already tinny, trebly guitars, for example. How did you record this, and can you go back a step and remix?

Yeah

This message kind of turned into a new thread in the mixing and mastering forum.

A new mix is under way! Ideally I would re-record the whole thing with some knowledge from people here, tutorials etc.

One quick question - What would be the best way to record our drums? I can only put them onto one track, unless the drummer played EXACTLY the same for how ever many mics I use. I have 6 SM58's and a Behringer 8 channel mixer at my disposal, thats what I use before. Any better ideas? Would it be better just using a condenser mic or something like that instead!

Thanks for your help
Simon

Why can you only record one track at a time? You should be able to at least do 2 tracks and get a good stereo submix while tracking.

How are you micing the drums? That is probably the issue. In the drum and mic forum there are a lot of tips.

Yep

The drums are actually done in stereo, but as I recorded it 6 months ago I'm not too sure as to whether I actually panned them at all. I think I may have slightly.

Thanks for your help
Simon
