Hello,

I'm pretty new to home recording. I have a Edirol UA-5 for recording guitar and vocals. For some reason every time I try to record there is a noticable hissing sound in the background. Is there any way I can reduce or remove the hissing?

Thanks.

Post more info on your setup and signal chain (what all do you use and how do you have it all plugged together)
Also you may want to check your USB chipset .... Found this .......

"Note to PC users: "INTEL", "ALI" or "Lucent" USB chipsets are recommended.
Incompatible USB chipsets: VIA Apollo BX, VIA Apollo MVP3, VIA Apollo MVP4, VIA Apollo Pro, VIA Apollo Pro Plus, VIA Apollo Pro133A, VIA Apollo Pro133, VIA Apollo KT133, VIA VT 83C572/VT82C586, VIA Tech, VIA Rev5, Standard Open HCD, OPTi 82C861, SiS7001, NEC Open HCD Controller, Compaq PCI to USB Open Host Controller."

From Here .

setup

My setup is pretty simple. My Schecter C1 Classic is plugged directly into the Hi-Z input of the UA-5. The UA-5 is connected to my Compaq AMD Athlon 2200+ running Vegas Video 4.0. I don't think the problem is with my chipset since I've also had the same problem using the UA-5 with a Dell.

You may still want to check in the Device Manager to see what chipset the USB controller uses. As you can see in the above image, this machine pry would not fair to well with the UA-5 as the VIA chipsets are very common.
