i'm recording songs on my laptop with the Lexicon Alpha via my software Music Creator 3. i was able to record the keyboard track (not MIDI) just how i wanted. now i want to record the voice track using my Shure SM48 mike with a new cable i bought yesterday via the mike port in the back of the Lexicon Alpha. although i can hear my voice when i record, there's something wrong with the connection. it hisses, loud enogh to be annoying and the meters doesn't really make a mark. when i sing it goes up to -54, when im quiet it doesn't even spike. i believe that when the mike is installed properly the meter should be pulsating on a regular basis, when i sing or speak it should spike up. (or correct me if im wrong.) i've read the audio windows several times but in actuality most of what i read is Greek to me.
any ideas?

i forgot to mention that if you write to me in technical language my brain fizzes. i think is the "sirena" part. :o anyway, i have no idea what is a pre amp. i was told that i should be able to plug in the mike in the Lexicon Alpha and be ready to go. are pre amps expensive? im on the tightest of budgets.

thanks for the help.

Sorry I missed the Lexicon, that is a pre amp. Make sure you have a balanced cord and if you do, try swapping it with another.

i leave messages on this forum as well as in the Music Creator forum. an answer there suggested that my problem was with the selection of the stereo side to record. since i had recorded the keyboard (not MIDI) unto the left side, i was to record the voice on the right side. as soon as i made the change i was able to record and turn the volume low enough to be heard with less hiss.

it also was pointed out to me that since i was using the mike input in the back of the Lexicon Alpha i was to use Line2/mic in the front of the Alpha to control the mike. i think i was overseeing that too.

thanks for your replies,

Um, I don't know what your interface is! You're NOT using the mic in on the laptop soundcard are you? That'd be a great source of noise amongst other things.
The advice from the otehr site seems, well, odd.
