i'm using a shure sm58, art mic presmp, fed into a soundblaster live platinum soundcard. When i record, this is a faint hiss in the background. Is there anyway to get rid of this? or is this just a result of a cheap mic preamp (or is it a soundcard problem)

It could be a number of things.

I got hiss from my SB card, so I upgraded to a Delta 66 with a breakout box. Hiss is gone. I get interference from my computer monitor when I record, so I turn it off while recording. Interference is gone.

Could be your preamp, or if you have a gain control on the preamp & it is cranked, that could cause probs. Is your cable going bad? etc etc etc.

My guess though is it is your soundcard. Cards with onboard inputs seem to cause that problem, I am assuming cos they are so close to the guts of the puter
