Hiss coming from cable?

Hi guys, well i have a Studio Projects B1 and a Behringer tube amp (mic100) connected to a Creative SB128 soundcard (yeah i know). I am getting a considerable amount of hiss from my recordings. I am currently using a 1/8 inch male plug cable to my computer with a 1/4inch converter connected to my preamp. Is the plug converter the thing that is contributing to all that hiss or is it mainly my soundcard? would getting a cable without a converter connecting my preamp to my soundcard recduce the hiss by alot?

Do you hear the hiss while recording or on playback only?

I don't suspect the cable, and you shouldn't have a lot of hiss unless your signal chain is adding it, in which case you should hear it when you monitor during recording.

This is the first time I have heard of someone using that Behri Pre so far, so I don't know if it's extra noisy or not. I certainly plan to steer clear of it myself.

Try disengaging any pads both on the mic, and on the pre-amp.

Make sure the record in level (in the computer) is set to a decent level after you have disengaged any pads.

And get yourself an Audiophile already!

Hmmmpf. Make sure that the pre-amp is connected to the line-in jack of the SB, and not the mic in. Its a common newbie mistake, and sometimes you just accidently mess up the wires.
This could cause a lost of hiss....
