Just Killing Time
I'd like to hear what you guys think. I'd consider this one of my first good mixes. Constructive criticism is always welcome :)

PS: I did not write, or play on this song. Recorded and mixed only.

Cheers.

His Name Was

Not bad. Turn the kick and snare way up. The overheads are loud enough. The mix seems too centered. Too much stuff happening at or near the middle. I personally like the bass up the middle, but if that's just one rhythm guitar track, spread em out a little to give the middle some space. The vocals are a little too out front. They have a lot of dynamics. I'd say compress em more to even them out, but that's up to you. Overall it's pretty good. Just needs a few tweaks, I think.

wot he said

it needs more space...everything feels like its happening between 10 and 2 o clock...keep the bass and drums in the middle and spread it out

Gregs right about the drums they're buried but Id get the panning right first before you bring them up as they need more room first

good stuff though...better than my first attempt, or second, or third..etc repeat to fade :)

Right guys, version 2 on the way in about 5 minutes :) Sit tight ;)

Thanks for all your help, really appreciate it :D

Here's Version 2

I'm havin trouble with compressing those vocals. They pump like hell. I've messed around with everything. Even with light compression, it's audible.

I've compressed vocals before, and gotten em sounding sweet. This is just annoying.

I can already hear that I should bring the vox up in the chorus, oh well  I'll get it next time.

Cheers guys.

One final version. I'm happy with the vocals now :)

Thx l@ds, youz r juzt d bestest ever :p

:D

By the way, I gotta spread before I can rep you, kc and gerg. :o

Drastic improvement. Only thing I noticed is the chorus needs a little more power to it. Add a few more guitars and pan them hard, might help. Double the vocal, and maybe some harmonies. Just a thought. Great song!

Once you give it some space then think about some reverb for the vocal. Like the song! Good Job!

There's reverb there, a short plate. Fairly low down as I felt a drier vocal was needed.

Thanks :)

Interesting how Irish bands have their own particular sound. This reminds me of very early U2 (when they still had balls....:D) Very nice song, nicely performed and the last mix sounds pretty good. I would have made the guitars a bit more aggressive in the chorus, but I'm just a heavy guy so.......;) Good work!

Joey :):):):)

So am I lol :D I'll probably do another version and re-amp the guitars through a mesa boogie or somethin :p

Thanks for listenin man, appreciate it :)

I think this sounds great. The rythym guitar and vox sound great. Bass and drums off beat slightly in a couple places. Only thing I can think off. Second the early U2 sound comment, straight off October. Maybe even a little Morrissey or Stone Roses or even Killers feel in there.

I don't think the drums are out of timing, I beat detectived them to the click. But this was after everything else was recorded, so I'd say that the guitars and bass are probably out of timing with the drums. I've a few more takes of guitars and bass, I'll probably throw them in instead.

Thanks for listening, appreciate it :)

Man, this sounds way better than the first version I heard of this song. Great job man! You're killin it!

Yeah, the final version is wayyy better than the previous. But I'm listening and there still seems to be no glue holding everything together. Couldn't put my finger on it, then... i turned the volume up. There it was. So, be sure to check your mix at low volume levels as well as full crank-out levels!!! :D

Great song!!

Sounds fantastic. I'm really digging this song. I'm a fan of reverb, so I'd put just a touch more on it even if it's just in the chorus. You get a few points for this one.
