Man, you have that pushed up. Really nice, about as a commercial mix I've heard. Really a good gold standard for the rest of us.

Good tune, nothing here but high praises.

That's quite cool man!

THANKS JIMMY

this one was very easy for me,
kinda autobiographical,
it just kinda fell out.

i think i tracked all of the guitars in one afternoon...
spent about 1 hour writing the lyric,
it was a memory that was vivid and easy to tap into.

Oh, this is. kick. ass.

What a groove. What a solo. What a vibe.

Man, this is simply masterful. Why are you not on radios all over the world?

really nice of you to say those things david,
thanks.

Mate, that does sound fucking good.

You'll have to tell us what your gear is, what's going into what and what settings. Sounds a bit in the style of both Blind Melon and Tantric.

I enjoyed that. Were those bongos? I liked the feel and it reminded me of a cross at of Yes and some Zeppelin. Nice litem. Great job on the sound. What kind of acoustic are you playing? Does it have a pick up or are you using a mic?

heh, thanks fishy....
shoot, i can't remember the last time i actually listened to the radio...
for music...
usually, it's NPR or sumptin'

thanks for listening, jdod....

gear, schmear, one thing i've learned in the last 10 years or so,
it that gear hardly ever makes that much difference.

the only gear worth talking about, is my actual guitar, a 2000 Taylor 414 grand auditorium,
it's nice.

the recording rig is dirt simple,
a $200 ART preamp, into a DBX MC-6, into a Maudio Audiophile soundcard, mixed into a PC running Sonar 6PE.

yes, there is a high dollar A Designs Audio MP-1 mic pre in there,
but i did not use it on this recording..

guitar tracks:
mics are combinations of a ADK Hamburg, or a AT4033, used one per track.
just typical gain staging for the mic pre and the compressor,
light settings on the compressor, more for color than anything else.

vocals:
ADK Hamburg, same gear path.

Bass:
Carvin LB70, into a Sansamp Bass DI, direct to sound card.

Percussion: same as the vocals

thanks for the interest

That's cool. Thanks. I always use as little gear as I can to get the sound I want recorded in the DAW. It appears that you do too. Get it right at the source then you don't need to cock about with it.

There is so much to like about this track: extremely well performed, great structure . . . and for all its complexity, very clean and unmessy. It is an engaging song.

I think all the elements have been recorded really well.

Were I to have mixed it, I might have done things slightly differently. Because of the nature of their reverb, the vocals are in a different acoustic space to the instruments, which are a lot drier. I'd aim to get them a bit closer, maybe less reverb on vox, or alternatively, more on the instruments. The bass enjoys a very happy relationship with the guitars, and the shaker chuggs along at a good level. The conga type of drum is a bit indistinct, and would not hurt the mix by being brought up a bit more and given a bit more bite. I would also have kept it going during the lead break at the end, then dropping it, rather than losing it before the break.

Great levels and distinction.

thanks felix!
i appreciate that i really do

hi spin,
those are congas. pretty small, very basic, but fun to play.
the Acoustic is a '00 Taylor 414, big body.
there is no pickup (never found one i like) but all recorded with a medium condenser mic at about 14" away.

Jealous...need to step up my game. Great job!

ha, bruthish, i appreciate the 'idea' of cranking the game up... but seriously, never jealous, just enjoy
thanks for digging it

You're stuff is always top notch Rob!
Can't even find anything to nitpick! :p

cheers

aint that the truth!
it's hard enough to just get to the point where you can get what you hear in a room, with one simple mic!

---------- Update ----------

Real nice!

thanks mjb

for listening, and commenting

you know, sometimes i like reverbs and delays to stand out against each other..
lots of modern mixes use elements of pure dry with radical verbs against each other....
even classic rock, like the zeppelin acoustic based tunes, will feature dry guitars with verby voices....

on this one, i kind of rode the fence.

That Melodyne is great isn't it? I'm thinking about upgrading my Sonar Artist to the version that has it. I used to be kind of principally opposed to pitch correction but after three hours of trying to get the perfect take on some stupid little clip...and after my patience is COMPLETELY blown...principle goes out the window. Besides....it's an arbitrary principle anyway. :)

That's nice guitar work on the lead. Nice tune.
