The guitar player in this band, my son's high school classmate, approached me to do a recording project for his senior high project. He's going to submit the "as recorded" and then mixed tracks along with an essay of some sort. We recorded three songs, two of which were recorded live and one that was tracked separately.

Here's Song #1 that was recorded with them playing live in the studio. The basic tracks include one Guitar, Drums and Bass. We then doubled the guitar and added the vocal separately.

The mix is pretty much as is recorded, but the vocal has had a good deal of help.

Thanks for any feedback...

Sounds good. Everything is recorded really well, and sounds good without mixing! The kids are alright. I like the doubled guitar - adds a nice spacial feel.

The drums sound very good on this recording.
The instruments are really fitting well into this mix as well.
Since the vocals were done seperately maybe something can still be done:D

Good recording. The guitar could be panned a little in my opinion. Drums sound excellent. Performances are good.

Bad points: Vocals. Probably not too bad a singer, but they sound too low in the mix to me, try panning them and raising the volume. A little EQ here and there :) I'd be interested to know how everything was recorded.

Good stuff

thanks for the comments... I don't understand your comment about panning the guitar as both are panned hard left and right. There's only one vocal take so I centered it... it was mixed a bit low since I don't consider this to be the group's strong point.

Kit:
two overheads
snare top and bottom
mic per tom
kick

Guitar:
5150-II chnl 1 Crunch
Mesa Recto cab 2x12
57 and 4050 two inches from grill

Bass
Direct

I'm enjoying the tune - I agree with the above - I think it's pretty well recorded - the bass and the drums are done well.

I also tend to prefer double-ing electric guitars and panning them - that's about all I every do! lol I think it works well here. The other thing to add a little variety is lay down an alternative guitar track instead of the doubled part but then again there's always lot of other things to do, aren't there.

thanks jeffoest...

yep, there's always more to do. the live take was once through and so was the guitar double. the vocal required several takes. the goal was to track three songs in one day.

this song took about 2 hours to track and I've spent about a hour mixing.

Drums are nice sounding!

Nice sounding recording. It sounds really organic to me. Nothing is really too harsh. I agree the drums sound really nice, but i might take a tiny bit of the lows out of the snare. That is strictly a preference thing. Rock on man!

Thanks for the listen Analytical Man...

I guess organic is good? ... meaning natural or simple. That's what we did. One thing that I stress with drummers is to beat the shit out of the drums and do the opposite, finesse the cymbals.

I did cut the snare at 200Hz. I'll take another listen.

This sounds really good to me. The drums are cool. Yep, beating the shit out of them sounds good. I like the whole mix, vocals too. That kid is lucky you helped them.

thanks Toki987...

I can't imagine having recorded like this when I was in High School (mid 70's)... much less for nothing It was a lot of fun to work with these guys. They have have talent. I hope to get the other two tunes mixed this week... I'll post them.
