High School music department needs recording equipment.

I am in charge of fundraising for the local high school music department. they have requested that we purchase recording equipment to record performances.

Any suggestions? Should we just start with a digi 003 and go from there?
I have some experience with home recording but have never recorded live or this big of a band.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

well, figure out what you want to do with all of it. Do you want to record multiple microphones to their individual tracks for mixing/editing later? If so, how many microphones? You'll also need a computer and speakers. And where are you going to place all of this? You'll need a snake to run all the audio cables.
Or do you just need something simple to record something straight to CD? Maybe two microphones ran to a small mixer and then ran to a stand alone CD recorder? That would be the cheap option...and anyone could learn that easily enough. And no need for computer upkeep.
