I'm new at this home recording, and I have some questions. (1) On my laptop I have two usb ports and I would like to know if I record from them at the same time, like playing a guitar on one, and a mike on the other. I have Audacity and Kristal software. The Mic is a Pyle Pro PPMIK
An audio interface will mean you can plug in one or two (or three or four, or as many inputs as your interface has) microphones on jack cable, then this will get recorded in to your DAW (Digital audio workstation (your software)) and each mic will be on a seperate channel. This means you can add effects, EQ, Compression etc to each individual track. Now, a mixer you will be able to plug in two mics, but they will come out of the mixer as a stereo signal. This means if you record into your computer like this both mics will be mixed together before they go into your DAW. So you could record this way but you will have very limited controll over each track, so if one is to quiet, when you boost the quiet one it will also boost the loud one, and if you apply an effect to one track it will also add it to the other mic, because they are on one track.
So i definately recomend getting a proper audio interface. Let me know how much you are willing to spend and i can reccomend some audio interfaces. I hope this helps!
This is very good for the price, this is what i use in my home studio, i think its perfect cor a small setup, and it also comes with cubase le5 which is pretty good recording software
That's not true, a mini mixer would work, but you would only be able to record both your vocals and guitar to one track, otherwise he is correct you would need a USB interface.
