I need help choosing some hi hats. My Dilemna is that I want the best of both worlds. I want them to sound soft and
washy on slow songs and on fast songs I want them to sound
loud but without too much stick ping if that makes any sense. I also like a sort of pingy sound on the bell part of the top hat. Sabian AAX stage hats-too pingy
Paiste Dimensions-too soft and washy
Please give some ideas and reasons.

I use a pair of Zildjian 14" New Beats and find that you can easily adjust the tone of the cymbols. For a quicker, tighter sound, I tighten the felt of tbe top hat, and for a darker sound I loosen it.

I have Zildjian 13" A Custom Mastersound hats and they're on the pingy side, but bright and musical. I also have an old pair of 14" Zildjians, which are washy. In my mind there are hats that are thicker and they sound as a pingy ride cymbal, if struck separately and there are ones that sound like a crash, those are thinner and washier.

Hello Thread, Ever try to use different drum sticks to get the sound your looking for? How about trying different ways of hitting cymbals and hi hats? These two examples alone will create all the sounds your looking for.

I hear you , Dr.Den, but would you be more specific as to what to use to create what sounds? I have sticks with "pointy" tips as well as round tips. I do feel the difference on ride and that's why I mainly use "pointy" for jazz, but other than that I haven't noticed much dif. I haven't tried the nylon tip yet, but want to.

Hello Gear_Junky, I find that oval or pointy wooden tipped sticks sound best on cymbals. I find that round tipped sticks are better for my technique. Round tipped sticks seem to bounce off the head better. I prefer wood tipped sticks but I have a supply of nylon tipped as well. Nylon tipped sticks cut really well and are consistant in attack and sound. Later...Dr.Den

Nylon tips also really bring out the "ping" on the ride.
