Hi, I've got a set of B8 Pro hats and after laying down a bunch of tracks I noticed they ping like a bastard at around 3.8k. If I eq it out it really kills the sound of the hats. I dont think I can treat this short of buying new hats. But I dont know if Im just being super critical. What do you guys think of the way it sounds?

in the mix With bass and scratch vox/guitar

just drums

I know that Greg L used to have B8's before he bought new ones. While they might not be the greatest hats, he had them sounding pretty good. Which leads me to believe that it might not be the hats so much as how you're recording them. What kind of mics are you using? Are you close-micing the hats, or just using overheads? It could be your room, EQ'ing, etc....Could be a lot of things other than the hats themselves.

That doesn't sound bad. Few questions.

Are you miking the hats? They sound especially loud and it sounds like I maybe hear some hat through the overheads and hard left when you open them. Sounds like they're mic'd, in which case, bring that track way down in the mix or scrap it entirely.

Are you playing the hats with the tip of the stick? That typically sounds pingy. Maybe use more of the side of the stick when hitting the hats.

I had those same hats, and while they're not great, they're definitely the best of the cheapo hi-hats. In any case, I don't think they sound bad at all in your clips.

Hey guys, thanks for the info's. I didnt actually play the drums, my drummer did. But I will keep technique in mind.

How you hear them is simply overheads (Oktava kk-012's), snare (57) and kick mic (ev 868). I could just bring the over all level down on them I suppose.

What would you guys suggest for a good set of hats for a decent price? This would be for like acoustic rock type of music.

look for some used stuff. 14" zildjian new beats always sound nice, as do the dyno-beats
